At that time we had Redmond, Hinchcliffe, Brightwell, Lake and White and every week a top manager was watching them from the stands.
It was rumored that Dalglish drooled every time he saw Lake.
How good was he? Very good
Would he have gone on to play for England? Probably. Hinchcliffe and White did
Lake was good in the air, had pace and two great feet. His problem was that because he was so good, he was extremely versatile and he never actually settled into one playing position
I personally thought he was too good to be a defender and his best position at that time was wide midfield, but over time he would become a central midfielder
I remember when he originally did his knee in against Bradford. I still think he should just have stuck the ball in the net instead of trying to dribble it round their entire defense.
