Like most TV pundits, his job is to elicit a reaction that leads to engagement with the audience whether that happens to be positive or negative. Having a go at Merson here is precisely the kind of reaction that Sky hopes for - it keeps the thoughts of its pundits at the forefront of social media with more and more people exposed to them.
Just ignore him rather than complaining and increasing the size of his online footprint.

When Sky had an overhaul of all of their pundits, getting rid of Le Tissier et al, I was amazed that they kept Merson on. I genuinely assumed it was some sort of charity case.
