hey guys thought i `d stick this in here.
i had an old computer i decided to fix. thing is when i was doing an evening course on pc maintainence i asked our teacher if data from my pc could be found. because of the steps i took (double system restore, without warning window to pop up) it closed off the drive. the teachers was a specialist in macs and microsoft.... he said "that data is lost ,forget about it, it`s gone." with that i replied "how about using linex/ubuntu ?" he said he knew nothing of the system but it could be worth a try. walking off after thinking he said...in a more convinced way "try it, it might work!"
i cant guarantee this will work, but try if you can- it may work and save you time and money.
so recently when i fixed the power supply i got it up and running.... entered the drive via ubuntu in the start up.
>within the drive it was recognised as having many bad sectors.
>so i used something called data conveyer (< smart data) to check the drive. there were 3 options i went for the long scan....("more than tens of mins")
> when the scan was finished after 40 mins roughly, i took the option of looking at the results. then all my lost data appeared in front of me.... all as music files/thumbnails etc. so i knew it was there. (as opposed to being an empty file / dud icon )
> so i found access and copied all of the data into a portable hard-drive and saved it. it all works fine!!!
> i tried entering the "lost sector of the drive" using a basic "ubuntu" path...... what i found was playing in around "the program files type like in microsoft " .....i stumbled across an obvious path.just looking around the files i found it , i ll post it later once i write it out.
