Pension Pot

Where ? Could you post a link ?
Not 80 but there’s been many reports in the media about 74 yrs of age. It’s all hearsay at the moment but worrying for the young ones ….
It comes as a recent report by the Institute for Fiscal studies (IFS) warned that without reform of the pension triple lock, state retirement age could rise to 69 by 2049 and to 74 by 2069.1 day

Its always a difficult question as everyones circumstances are unique. The positive is that you are looking at your pension now and wanting to plan.
I would suggest that alone puts you ahead of many many people. It always amazes me the number of people who get into their mid 50's before taking any interest.
tbf they only take interest when they get in their 50s because they can now actually afford to pay into a damned pension.
I speak from experience lol

Anyone able to advise how well I'm doing in terms of my pension currently?

39 years old.

Got a teacher pension thay currently shows as £7665 pa OR £4927pa with a one off £32851.
No longer paying into this

Then got 2 other workplace pensions thay have a current combined total pot of £41500.

Recently increased my pension contributions to be adding in £8115 pa to the pot between mine and employer contributions.
It's a bit how long is this string without a bit more info, but a few things you can work out yourself.

Start with how much you think you need to live on when you retire. If you're not planning on retiring until you reach state pension age, you'd have almost £20k (in today's money) from that and your teacher pension, so you need to guess/work out how much you might need. That depends on whether you own or rent, the sorts of holidays you like, the car you want to drive etc etc. Suggestions that a comfortable retirement for a couple is about £40k a year, which sounds high to me based on what we currently spend, but will be very individual.

Do everything in today's money and work out what you think you might need. Take off your teacher pension and state pension if you want. That'll give you a figure, say £10k a year still needed. Multiply that by about 30, that would mean you'd need a pot of about £300k - remember that could/should include ISAs as well.

Whatever the number, it'll sound a lot, but don't panic. Google compound interest calculator. Make the starting amount the £41k you've currently got in a pension, annual addition of around £8k and however many years until you think you'll want to retire. Set the interest rate at about 4% - that depends what you invest in, but that should be a reasonable amount after inflation. That'll tell you what your pot may be when you retire. Hopefully it's close to the number above, but play about with it until it does - don't just increase the interest rate, do things like increase contributions by 3% a year (your salary will increase). You might find you need to up your contributions to £10k or work a year longer than you thought, but you'll be on the right path and the fact you're wondering about it before you hit 40 puts you way ahead of most people.

If you haven't already, I'd also suggest a LISA - you get basic tax rebate when you pay in but no tax when taking it out after 60, so you can use it to supplement a pension, minimising the tax paid.

As a couple of useful resources, check out Meaningful Money or Damien Talks Money on YouTube.

If you do consider a LISA you have to open it before you are 40 and can pay in until you are 50.

Well I suppose you could look at it 2 ways. You could worry about it, something that might or might not happen or you can mitigate it by upping your pension payments.

That all said it would be political suicide for any party to push it to 70 or above. Its a big psychological threshold.

When I was starting employment at 18 on my 1st day the manager marched me round to a financial expert. 45 minutes later I had a pension. Best thing any manager ever did for me. Here we are 40 years later and looks like I possibly have enough to retire. Will find out on the 9th August

If you want to estimate how big your pension pot will be using previous returns over a long period of time this calculator is nice and simple to use.

https://www.2020financial.co.uk/pension-forecast-calculator/

You will need to look at what your defined contribution pension is invested in to understand the split of bonds, equities and cash. You can normally see fairly easily from the pension fund fact sheet.

As regards pension advice and youtube James Shack is very good and gives examples of how people have planned their retirement.

When I started work in 1974 as a teacher the pension scheme was compulsory.
Thank god.
It was Thatcher that gave people the 'right' to opt out.

I've got gaps all over my NI record (lived abroad) and wonder how to 'patch' it up. I have no private pension.
You can only go back 6 years to 2018 now. The extension period closed a while back.
For periods you were abroad you can pay class 2 contributions, about £200 a year. It’s an absolute no brainer.

Check those two workplace pensions and see what the charges are. If one is significantly higher, it might be worth consolidating - either into the one with lower charges, or a brand-new one.

Higher charges will gnaw away at your money.

Never considered charges. I'll take a look, thanks

And die on the 10th.
