We're currently looking at venues etc for having our wedding breakfast at and when you see the prices you realise why weddings are so much, we wanted a low key wedding for around 40 day guests and about another 40 at night and thought we would piss the whole day for 5k but no, most places want anywhere between 40-80 quid per head for a meal and a few drinks, plus maybe 1-2k for venue, 500 for church, 1k for dress, another 700 for bridesmaids dresses and suit hire etc, thats without a cake, car, dj for night, flowers, rings etc etc

I'm starting to wish I hadn't asked now!

My youngest son is getting married in July, they haven't really gone mad, however, the costs add up to around 10k.....photographer alone is almost 2k...

What's wrong with a Kodak Instamatic?

Kids today eh?
I worked with a woman when I was serving and she paid £5k for her wedding photographer. Utter bollox I thought, until she brought the wedding album in. I'm a cynical fucker, but by Christ it looked fucking good. Oh, and she was no fucking oil painting either!

I got married abroad.
2 weeks all inclusive in the carrabean 2k, £500 on top of holiday price, for photographer, a guy filmed it also, cake champagne etc, ride on a horse drawn cart driven by a midget (didn't specifically request that btw) round the island resort. Parents and in-laws paid for themselves.
Had a reception when we got back for friends + rest of family, 1.5k. We did it for under 5k .
still married. Want to go renew our vows at the same place for our 10th anniversary in a couple of years time

That's the way to do it. We got married in Kefalonia-had an absolute ball- and had a small do when we got back. Had a great time overall and spent about 8k.

We got married on the cheap, we already had two kids and had bought a house, so we didn't see the need for a big flash wedding.
We gave our parents a day or two notice and had a quiet ceremony with just us, the kids, her mum and dad and brother, and my mum and my best man.
A few peoples noses were put out of joint, but fuck em. It was our day, not theirs.
That was over 20 years ago and we're still together.

Great post.

Seen so many weddings of Family/Friends who've splashed the cash, they love each other, the whole perfect couple thing... a few months later they're on Jeremy Kyle (lol)

In my view if you truly love each other you don't need a piece of paper and a big fancy doo to let everybody know you're married.

If or when I get married with Gem (2yrs already) I think we'll go abroad for a beach ceremony or something, much more relaxed.

On a side note - Village Hotel do weddings for £3k, i see the adverts all the time as it's my local gym.

Yep a few years ago I went to one of the nicest weddings I've ever been to must have cost a fortune within a year she had an affair and left one of the nicest blokes ever very sad

silver wedding next year but I remember waking up the morning after thinking fuck me all that expence for one day
