Pep probably has the best record in “big games” out of all the managers currently employed,

I feel sometimes on here posters just seem to feel we should win every game and not give any credit to the opposition. As that tactical video posted above highlights klopp surprised pep with his tactics and they have the quality of players to punish. No one shit the bed or over thought tactics etc. Liverpool just where better on the day. It happens they are also a very very good side especially at home.

Did pep get his tactics wrong first half? Yes he assumed Liveepool would play 4 2 4.

Did pep make the adjustment at halftime to rectify his error?
yes, he changed to our usual 4 2 3 1 shape

on another day that goal foden scores counts and everyone on here is saying what a genius pep is etc. Cancelo mistake probably cost us a point and the manager can’t be held accountable for a mistake made by a player.

The final score dictates all analysis or discussion of Pep's tactics. If we lose the tactics were wrong regardless of what happened in the game.

Case in point is the Lyon game people still bang on about 3 years later. If Sterling and Laporte don't make huge errors we cruise through but someone this is Pep's fault.

It's no coincidence this thread only ever gets bumped after a loss.

or that Pep only ever seems to 'overthink' games when we lose

Tbf we’re 4 points off the top already.

With Spurs & Chelsea breathing down our neck.

Pep’s fucked up a few times this season but yesterday was bordering on negligence. It was laughably bad from Pep.

We should be concerned, because if Haaland gets injured we’ll be in deep shit.
You are a parody poster. Aren't you?

Definitely saw that as Liverpool's cup final rather than a tactical misjudgement on our part. They were peak condition and psyched up into the red zone. We were probably around 20% off our peak form, Haaland in particular was not moving as well as he does on his best days. Still, we were the better side for nearly all the game.

That's football when you have 60 games a season. Teams arrive in different levels of form mentally and physically. Liverpool saw the opportunity to get a psychological turning point for their season, threw everything at it. We just tret it like another league game against a big opponent, because the reality for us is, if we're going to win this league it'll be by getting into a really strong position between now and February, and then deciding how to best to use our mental and physical resources with something left in store for the big CL games.

‘WE PLAYED WITH COURAGE’ SAYS GUARDIOLA

O yes Pep. We did. With 3 central defenders. Foden as wing back. KDB and Gundo behind Haaland. We did.

Well said!

-- Southgate, who plays Saka as wing back

Interesting breakdown of peps tactics the other day.

Watching that you can't help but feel Grealish needed to come in for Gundogan or De Bruyne as the game went on. Grealish getting the ball in areas Gundogan was operating would have seen a much more direct approach which would have suckered the opposition in and allowed space for others - particularly De Bruyne.

The whole problem was balance. We had no one play wide right. Even if that would have been mahrez (god forbid this season) it would have been better. We play the same way for 10 games and then this change, its going to be difficult. In this respect it was similar to the UCL final. When we fuck with formation we tend to get fucked, just like any team.

I think on reflection, Pep tried negate the tactics klopp had deployed previous. Peps idea of numerical advantages in the midfield was probably right, and had Liverpool adopted the formation they had used in their previous league games who knows? It could of been a different result. However, By pure chance or coincidence, klopp and his team had decided to change the way they set up from their previous games, as it wasn’t working for them up to this point and it so happened to counter peps thinking. Coupled with the fact that some of our players didn’t take the initiative, ie foden getting at Milner or de bruyne going out wide to cancelo to provide width, we just couldn’t put our usual stamp on the game. The free kicks (one leading to the goal) and corners we had we wasted and we created little clear cut chances. Very Unusual for us. All in all a learning curve and I suppose in the grand scheme of things not a very significant loss.

One good thing about losing the game is the winning after that. And we win a lot after losing once. :)
Go Pep

Starting to tinker but in pep I trust

Tactics bizarre today & I thought it gave them more possession
