Pep Guardiola - 2022/23

We had a very fortunate run of fixtures before the World Cup, so for me we were well below par going into the break five points behind Arsenal. People have also become overly complacent around our ability to put a run of wins together after Christmas.
People are blind and go off what has happened before. We have played well in probably 30% of our games this season. This is not the same side. The hunger isn’t there anymore and some players just don’t seem either mentally tough enough or have the desire to do it all again. We lack leaders since Fern left and when you compare this side with sides of the recent past, it’s chalk and cheese.

Pep isn’t helping with his stupid decisions and tactical set ups either. The way we are playing and with the injury problems we have, I can’t see us getting more than 80 points this season. Rodri aside, who has been consistently good this season? I can’t think of anyone else.

This side has been the definition of consistency over the past 5 years, a drop in form was always inevitable.

Factor in the WC, fixture congestion and the tough set of fixtures we’ve had then our form shouldn’t really surprise anyone.

I do think we need to take more risks as a side though. 1 shot on target against United and Southampton with the talent at our disposal is simply not good enough.

Pep is obviously the man to sort it though.

This fucking world cup excuse is really grating now. Are we the only team had players at the world cup?
Some of them were never used or played rarely, and have had time off after as well after it.
Its all nonsense.
I know. Ridiculous. Most of our players were out by the QF and some like Cancelo, Grealish and Phillips hardly played!! That little holiday they all got seems to have done them the world of good….Not!

The warning signs have been there all season.

As you say, we’ve looked good in maybe 30, 40% of our games. But the failure to close the game off against Villa suggested a lack of focus, as did the way we eased off against Newcastle when we got back to 3-3. The Champions League performances away at Dortmund and Copenhagen were also very mediocre.

We’ve not helped ourselves by playing around with the team though. The match at Anfield was a case in point - no one knew where they were playing - and we got away with one against Chelsea last week. Every week seems to bring a different formation and it hasn’t helped us defensively.

Some still don't see the problem. Some still feel we have a 12/14 game winning streak in us and we are saving it all for CL

We were unfortunate in the game against Liverpool at Anfield with Foden's disallowed goal. Similar circumstances to their (Utd) equaliser in the derby. Injuries to the likes of Stones, Dias and to some extent Laporte hasn't really helped either (which is an occuring theme) and despite Haaland's unquestionable ability he is still has to be fully intergrated with his current team mates (which does take time). Although Pep hasn't been perfect he isn't a miracle worker either.

No, thats a myth, and to be honest even if we are struggling a bit now only a fool would want anyone other than Pep to sort us out, if thats next season then its next season thats okay too.
What games was we great in?

I'm talking about the actual performance overall and not the result.

I will hold my hands up to knowing nothing if this ages badly, but Pep has got it badly wrong this season.

His outlook is still badly scarred from his experiences in his first season here and other occasions where his team has been done on the break after dominating.

His obsession with control worked with a false nine but he has now got the most potent striker in the world, supported by world class attacking midfielders. Yet he is handicapping them by insisting that direct, dynamic attacking is going to result in losses.

Haaland's goals have papered over a big drop off in team performance this year and whilst he is the best manager in the world, it is also true to say that there are other managers who are not obsessed with 'control' who would probably be getting an awful lot more out of the attacking riches city has.

The most worrying thing for me, and I hope I am wrong, is that there are signs that there is some sort of discontent/disbelief among the players too. So many are so far off it, it is unlikely to be that they have all hit poor form at the same time.

Time for Pep to take the handbrake off - in the league, at.least.

Our football is unrecognisable at present. We look devoid of confidence and ideas and Pep clearly has no idea how to fix it.

We are not utilising our strengths properly, players are not at their best, tactics are mind numbingly boring and as Gundo has hinted....the mentality is all off.

Something has to give.....we need new inspiration and we need new ideas, because what we are watching currently is not acceptable.

Did the season start in October, my mistake, but from those games I’d say we were pretty good in the Brighton, Dortmund, Chelsea Sevilla games can’t remember the Fulham and Leicester games but we won them so can’t have been too bad.
Either way agree or not, my main point is Pep will fix things so I have no worries.

Never have been one for knee jerk reactions, and probably stick up for our players and managers too much - I even got called a happy clapper once haha - whatever the fuck that’s meant to be. And I know we were totally cheated out of that today but are we getting into “taken the team as far as he can” territory? Something isn’t right at all this season. Our transfer window was shit despite Haaland. United could actually win the league this season by default. We should never have let that be a possibility. Maybe pep just isn’t cut out to make a big centre forward work. We just don’t create anything at the moment. It’s actually boring watching us at the moment. Never felt that since pep arrived. I dunno? It’s just not right. Hopefully he’ll conjure something up but I’m beginning to wonder. Kev and Bernie look totally shot of confidence. Why? Phil is a shade of himself. I used to think it’s ok because David silva, or yaya or prime Kev will sort things out when things get tough. I don’t feel anyone is leading the team on the pitch. I think we can write this season off to be honest. Unless we can get in form for the chumps league. Mind you could be worse. Imagine being Liverpool
