All true. I lived in Madrid for a couple of years and had no idea about how politically fractured the country is. Catalans and Basques see the Spanish national team as a construct and representation of Franco’s Madrid and more or less refuse to acknowledge or recognise it. I was genuinely surprised by the level of contempt that both Catalans and Basques hold towards Madrid but when you read about how Franco suppressed them then you begin to understand. Pep will have been brought up with these stories and he’ll never forget.

Interesting to think how Catalonia could fare internationally with independence. Their team around Barcelona’s prime would have been some side for such a small would be nation.
