And if I supported Inter Milan I would hate it when AC Milan are referred to simply as Milan.
Why would you?

Milan are Milan and Internazionale are Internazionale. That's their names.

It's the same as us not referring to Liverpool as 'Liverpool FC' and Everton as 'Everton of Liverpool'.

We don't call Liverpool 'Liverpool FC' or Everton 'Everton of Liverpool'.
Isn't it Athletic Club Milan and Internazionale di Milan?

Yes. But the AC is just the same as FC in English, but it comes at the start. And Inter's offical name is Internazionale of Milan. The name of the club is Internazionale; it just happens to be in Milan.

Each set of supporters refer to themselves and each other as Milan and Inter, so it's not really the same as the whole Manchester thing. It's the English (including myself until I went there) that incorrectly refer to them as AC Milan and Inter Milan.

In which case please accept my humble apology.

Ha ha, no need. Most of us continue to use the terms we grew up with.

On the Manchester thing, I remember reading something about the club having realised that it was too late to stop the rot, so they were going to focus on getting us known internationally as City. If I'm correct, they even carried out a mini trial in the states and then surveyed the participants. When asked to respond to Manchester, most of them said 'United'. And when asked to respond to City, most of them said 'Manchester'.

No matter where I am in the world, I usually only have to say I support City and they instantly know which City I mean, so it seems a sensible approach for the club to take.

Interesting to know that DB, was that trial done recently?

No, it was done in the early days of ADUG, if I remember correctly. As much as we supporters hate the word, the owners need a 'brand' to work with. Manchester's already gone (it would take far too much effort to re-educate the whole rest of the world and David Pleat), so City seems the best alternative.

Yeah seems a logical idea. Reason for asking was it done recently was that i couldnt imagine many Americans of knowing of City before the takeover.

It wasn't just done off the cuff. They did a week's worth of marketing before hand (billboards, radio etc) and then did the survey.
