If there's one Manger who know's how to beat Barcelona at their own game, it's Pep.

After all, he is the Architect of Tiki-Taka, and the Barcelona style of play. On-going.

hopefully he does better than with bayern vs barca..

Cruyff put everything in place at La Masia and set out the style of play that was taken on by Rijkaard and then Pep, who reaped the benefit of all the talent coming through from the set up.

This groundwork bollocks we keep hearing about only started when turtle head took over at Trafford. Though he did do a great job to be fair.

Ffs. I swear there are some on here that would be happier if it was Andy Morrison hoofing it up to Lee Bradbury at camp nou. As long as we do Celtic and Brentano doesn't recreate any of those magical (spawny) anfield nights we'll go through. Our opposition will then obviously be Bayern, real, and either the other Madrid cunts or PSG.

I'd love to see Andy Morrison vs Barca, he'd fucking break them all into pieces. On the other hand I never want to see Lee Badbuy again.

He'd be on his second yellow in the first ten minutes in Europe. God help messi if Andy managed to catch him :-)

10 mins, mind you he might be kicking thin air until then?? He'd do well to last that long though. We do owe the man a huge thanks for helping drag the club back to the higher reaches of the game, his autobiography is a great read

Pep hates it when people say his style is Tiki-Taka.

I'm not sure if below is a quote from an interview or from one of the Pep books or a newpaper interview.

Barcelona's ability to dominate teams and possession with their tiki-taka passing style won them plaudits around the world.

But Guardiola told Perarnau: "I loathe all that passing for the sake of it, all that tiki-taka. It's so much rubbish and has no purpose. You have to pass the ball with a clear intention, with the aim of making it into the opposition's goal. It's not about passing for the sake of it.

"Don't believe what people say. Barca didn't do tiki-taka! It's completely made up! Don't believe a word of it! In all team sports, the secret is to overload one side of the pitch so that the opponent must tilt its own defence to cope.

"You overload on one side and draw them in so that they leave the other side weak. And when we've done all that, we attack and score from the other side.

"That's why you have to pass the ball, but only if you're doing it with a clear intention. It's only to overload the opponent, to draw them in and then to hit them with the sucker punch. That's what our game needs to be. Nothing to do with tiki-taka."

Currently Barca are better than us so I expect to come behind them in the group but I don't expect trouble off the other two. Anything better would be a bonus but I can't see it currently. Their forward line is immense.

By the time the last 16 comes round, I would expect us to be flying.

Did Pep not manage against Barca with Bayern?

He did , lost the away leg 3-0 and beat them 3-2 at home. That 3-0 loss was one of the most amazing game i have ever seen. Pep used all his 10 players to man mark barcelona and the game was 0-0 till 70 odd minute when a defensive mistake by benatia lead to the first goal. He later said in the press conference that he used the same tactic Marcelo Bielsa ( bilbao coach in 2008 or 9) used against his barcelona side that finished 2-2 and pep believed that had been his most difficult match as a barca boss.

btw Gary 7-0 Neville was saying pep was suicidal to use man marking aganist barca in his commentary

You really sure about that?

We might lose against Barca, they have some individual qualities at the moment that nobody else really has, but we won't be inferior to them as a team. In the past few seasons when we've met a big team, except PSG who were arguably ahead of us in development at the time, we have looked like a team who are happy to be there and just seeing where they can get to.
We will go to win, we will go to match them and we have the ability to beat them if the tactics are ready by then. It might take a little longer than group stages to get that right, but i expect us to look like a fucking team that belongs in Europe rather than a team that's amazed to be there.

True. But by that logic nobody would know how to beat Pep better than Barca.

Did Cruyff implement and expand Tiki Taka?

Only asking.

Thought Pep instigated it and took it forward?

Pep revolutionised the way Barca play compared to Rikjaard etc, same kind of difference as we are seeing at City now. They were more advanced than we were previously, of course, but the stuff we are now seeing at City, is the same stuff he brought to Barca.

Even the side Pep played in was not the same style as the one he managed.

But they have been at it a lot longer than us & have Messi, Suarez & Neymar, which is a lot of goals.

I think that win against PSG was arguably the biggest win post-takeover (excluding obvious ones like QPR, Cup finals etc.). PSG were a perfect measuring stick to see how far we've come. Going into it both teams had tons of money, world class talent, and domestic success but were labeled as unable to get over the proverbial champions league "hump". We played brilliantly and after 180 were on top.

These upcoming two matches against Barca will provide another measurement to see how far we have to go to be on the Barca level at the beginning of Pep's 3 years. I think we can all agree the ultimate goal of the Sheikh and his family/group is to be on the same level and eventually try to surpass Barcelona. After all, we've hired their executives, manager, and now goalkeeper. Unfortunate that it will be VERY tough to win our group, but at least we won't get knocked out by them in the round of 16 like we have 2 of the last 3 years.
