Pep (Sky Interview)

I actually thought he was quite transparent. It's the perfect harmony of saying to someone, here's exactly how to do something, yet they don't have the wherewithal to apply it.

This absolutely.

Mourinho knows exactly how Pep does it, to the finest point. Of course he does. So does Klopp.

Both can put out a team which might beat it, on a given day, but you can give both of them all of the best footballers in the world in every position & they still won't be able to replicate it.

About that, I think he's serious, and everything he said tonight said that.

Football is simple, have the ball, work it well, create scoring chances, we do it very well (even if I don't think we score from enough imho).

That was the biggest thing that came out of it, and, don't work hard enough, and you won't play.

Imo, that is the most important thing, the key which makes Pep's system function. Sheer hard work.

And it's the question Pep (& Vinny) are asking already regarding next season. Will they all be up for doing it again ?

We saw v Huddersfield & for most of the game v Southampton, an example of a City team playing the Pep way, with one or two of its star players coasting. Doesn't work.

He's so intense and he waffles on a bit and takes the interview miles away from the original question nearly every time. Neville's questions were more like him attempting to show to Pep that he understood his methods, but Pep seemed way ahead in his thinking.

My favourite bit (and I only watched the first half or so) was when he said about passing around from side to side at the back , "I hate that!" and laughed.

I hate it too, Pep. Pointless passing where nobody will take responsibility. We hardly ever do it now.

That's what all the football intellectuals used to want the England team to do.

If they booted it down the pitch, they would all tut tut, but if the centre backs passed it from side to side 5 times, then gave it Chris Waddle stood in a fullback position, for him to boot it down the pitch, they would all say "that's better!".

Gary Neville is a prime example of that ilk imo. Full of shit.

That's one of the great things about having him as our manager: he has taught me plenty about the game. I find myself now saying things to my mates like "we aren't breaking the lines enough" or "that's pointless passing" or "win it straight back now" and I've got that straight from understanding his methods.

He was being quite careful not to give too much away. I still don't know if City have a pitch marked out with zones at the CFA like he did at Bayern but if they do, they never show as far as I am aware on club videos and he did not refer to it tonight, which he could have in response to one question.

I thought he was generally quite vague. Its alright to know the plan but training and putting it into place is the hard bit, Neville did ask him a few times how he convinced the players and that he never answered. With respect to the lines to form the zones where a winger and fullback must not be in the same zone he didn't say that on Sky and like you said he could have done The CityTV videos only show general training and messing about nothing from the tactics play

A big one for me, is that you have to get it wrong, if you play this way.

That's one of the main reasons people can't do it imo. You will get mugged off the ball by teams like Liverpool, no matter how good you are.

The key is to live with it & still beat them anyway, or failling that, still win stuff.

It takes courage & most haven't got it (including supporters). I think City & Arsenal fans would be the only ones in the Prem, to be ready to instantly take that kind of play onboard, because we already had a kind of background for it but still we had loads of 'git ridovit' merchants & Joe Hart supporters.
