It was absolutely necessary yesterday, Arsenal were out of ideas and a goal down after 10 mins, because as was clear to anyone who watched they didn't expect us to play that way. It was refreshing to see Pep make a pragmatic decision to make the best out of what we have, play to the strengths of Haaland, Doku and Reijnders and sit back, forcing Arsenal to come to us. I also have to give credit for not getting drawn into the usual shitehousing that we see against them, was a very mature performance.
We played (nearly) the same against the rags except we overpowered them because they're fucking shite. I absolutely want to see City play this way again especially against Liverpool. They look like they can be caught out on the counter and Haaland proved yesterday that he is simply the best in the world when we counter attack.
Pep is the greatest of all time in my opinion and nothing will change that, but he has often chosen his hill to die on by sticking to his system when we needed something alternative. Yesterday was a clear message that he is willing to change when needed and it worked a treat.

From his own words, it doesn't seem like something he's willing to do more often. Seems like he was being pragmatic and trying to catch Arsenal off guard by putting them behind the 8 ball.

And with this style of football, it's a tightrope depending entirely on whether you don't concede. If Donnarumma doesn't come that far out or Ake doesn't play the attacker onside, we likely ride it out and get the win, and it looks like a moment of genius as a result.

I doubt we'll see this again unless necessary for whatever reason.

We've played good counter attack football in the past with Sane and Sterling on the wing, and then gradually lost our pace over the next 5 years.

We can still be a possession heavy team but we have to be willing to utilise the pace we now have available on the counter as an extra wrinkle in the attack.

Problem with that tactics is that you hardly win the league that way, it's better suited for the UCL. If Pep had favoured this practical approach earlier on in the UCL, we would have had at least 2 UCL titles. I don’t want that to become something we regularly do in the PL.

Horses for courses mate. Many times during Pep's tenure, we went for a cricket score instead of locking down shop & it cost us.

We were so supreme back then, we could get away with it over the course of a season, but right now we need to box clever.

I don't expect much by the way of success this season, but what I do want to see is significant performance progress & CL qualification.

If winning or drawing ugly at times helps us achieve those goals during a transitional season, then so be it imho...

Obviously the free flowing pretty football is brilliant but there is a certain attraction to just shit housing wins and winding up the opposition.

We've had it done to us so many times so I'm all for Pep going full Barclays **** mode for a season.

Loved Mancini s defensive away approach. Taught me a lot about the game.i was aware of the Italian deep defense thing,just hadn't seen it in action.Loved it.
I also loved the Howard Kendall /Alan Harper sweeper period too
Finally we could pick up points away from home.brutal but effective...............

When you take over a crock of shit with under confident underperforming players....you should look to sort the defence out first
The current utd manager spent loads on strikers to get goals.....
Build from the back .build up confidence.move forward.bit it's all bright lights and big transfer fees.........their downfall imo

Pep Guardiola is not running this show, Pep Lijnders is.

Opposition teams have got around the table with the likes of tha PL and pigmol. Press City and rough them up, this is why 5 subs have been allowed and referees have been lenient on the redshirts kicking fook out of City. The PL has killed pure football in the pursuit of financial gain for the cartel clubs.
I believe City have decided, if you can't beat them, join them. Hence the introduction of the dipper coaches. It was pretty obvious in the last few games that dipper tactics have been introduced to our game.

Definitely a tactic we haven’t used in years under pep . Refreshing to see it again and used effectively just like in the Mancini era . It has also without doubt got us vital points in away games this season which we would have lost in previous seasons. The other pep our assistant must have convinced Pep Guardiola to use this this tactic this season. The Pep effect eh ! ;)
