Don't see the point in having an optional year. He has earned the right to leave whenever he wants, which city would respect and city would never bring someone else in if he wanted to stay.

I'm guessing it simply to push back the inevitable questioning about his future next year just that little bit further plus allows viana to use the playing under Pep carrot when going after new players next summer.
