If he’s publishing 1st quarter be an interesting read! Recall seeing that article before - 63% asthmatics in the Liverpool squad? If true a scandal, but is it true? Who are they? Are Peppa pigs boots clean after muddy puddle jumping?
All this, and more, in next week’s episode...
The incidence rate is way too high. Even Olympic cyclist incidence rates aren’t that high:
Do airway-widening drugs enhance performance, asks George Winter
www.cyclingweekly.com
“Only 17 per cent of the cyclists who competed in the 2008 Olympics were registered as asthmatic, but these athletes won 29 per cent of the individual medals. Could there be a connection to asthma medication?”
Since that article was published, we’ve figured out the answers (that we already knew):
A type of asthma drug, known as ß2-agonists, can boost sprint and strength performance in athletes who don't have the respiratory condition, finds a review and pooled data analysis of the available evidence.
www.sciencedaily.com
“A type of asthma drug, known as ß2-agonists, can boost sprint and strength performance in athletes who don't have the respiratory condition, finds a review and pooled data analysis of the available evidence, published online in the
British Journal of Sports Medicine.”
But ScouseFC seem to have more than twice the incidence rate compared to other teams:
Up to a third of top-flight players could be living with the condition according to respiratory researcher Dr John Dickinson
inews.co.uk
“A leading professor on respiratory research in elite athletes claims that around a third of Premier League players have undiagnosed exercise-induced asthma and insists they will be taking a “risk”
if they return to playing too soon.”
Here is the money quote though:
“He also screened Liverpool’s squad a decade ago and found that a quarter of the players had the condition. Furthermore, his estimate is based on the percentages they have found in rugby players, which is played at a similar intensity and in similar conditions to football. In comparison, they find only nine to 12 per cent of the general population experience the condition.”
So 10 years ago 1/4th of them had it and now its 2/3rds. Lolololthey are definitely cheating so they can all take asthma meds.
FWIW I bet the incidence rate among the populations probably higher, we just don’t (can’t) push ourselves to the limits elite footballers do.
