Perspective (2026 Edition)

good overview that and spot on!

Do think we need to jump in the market for a midfielder even if its just for a few months to help out the gap with injuries to Rodri/Nico G
It's certainly a good overview but we can't keep playing the perspective card after every dire performance and the Wolves game is now a must-win

It speaks volumes for our gradual decline that we're now desperate for Nunes to return

We've had a golden era where we had players who were absolutely at the top of their game. Kompany, DeBruyne, Silva, Aguero and Fernandinho to name but a few. Sadly, through players of that calibre being seemingly unavailable we have replaced them with decent players, but not like for like in terms of quality. The aforementioned bought into playing for City, whereas I have reservations over a number of our current squad. If the quality declines and the mentality and commitment isn't there, unfortunately what we are seeing is a direct result. After the treble season we seemed to sit on ceremony and didn't recruit particularly well. The signs were there during the fourth PL title, with a continued detereoration up until present day. The drop off has been noticeable with performances no where near the level we have witnessed during Pep's tenure. I appreciate that nothing lasts forever, but it would be a catastrophe for Pep to bow out in such circumstances.

We're in the middle of a re-build and we don't really buy crap players. We just have to give the new players (especially those signed from other leagues) time to settle and get used to Pep's way.

I really believe that losing Dias, Gvardiol and Gonzalez pretty much at the same time, when they were all in great form and three of our best and main players, really knocked our confidence and belief.

Agree on that and the others out injured and suspended.

I had three main targets for City to aim for this season:

1) Confirm a top 4 finish before the final day
2) Get the good vibes back at the club and maybe develop a new system
3) Make a better showing of ourselves in the cups

All on target so far.

I've said it many many times in the last few months and I'll say it again: if 24-25 was a repeat of Pellegrini's final season then 25-26 is likely going to be a repeat of Pep's first season. Lots of new players and lots of new ideas, which means lots of good games overall but a few really bad days at the office while things are figured out. When we beat Forest 2-1 I couldn't believe how far ahead of schedule we seemed, and thought we might be in a title race after all, but since then we've just had a harsh reality check that we're not the finished article yet.

Think about it, though. 15-16 and 24-25 were both hampered by old players, a soft centre, a fragile mentality, and the old spine struggling a bit. Back then, Hart was coming to the end, Kompany was injured, Yaya was old, Silva was injured, and only Aguero was fit. In 2025, Ederson had checked out, Dias was injured a lot, Rodri was injured for the whole season, De Bruyne got old, and only Haaland was fit. It took us three transfer windows to sort things out back then and 16-17 was largely a wildcard season while Pep figured out what his new team was going to look like. All those new ideas and all those new faces needed time to bed in and for things at City to become habitual for them. That's where we are again now. I'm willing to give Pep another 12 months, just to see what the team looks like once it's steady and stable and isn't changing every few weeks.

We won't catch Arsenal, but we were never going to catch Arsenal. I've said since the summer, the title is theirs. They're a few years into their cycle and are hitting the crest of a wave at the right time. Liverpool are still in the post-Klopp hangover, Villa won't be up for the challenge, and City are rebuilding. Well done to Arteta for getting it right at last. For City, this year was just about improving on last year (which we already have), getting the good vibes back, and trying to put something in place that we can build from. Those building blocks are only just being put into place, so we're going to have to suck up the bad days until those blocks are set.

This season will probably click in March, like 16-17 did. We'll be too far away from Arsenal to catch them in the league but we'll likely finish 2nd on about 78-79 points. That's fine by me. We'll probably have reached yet another cup final (providing we don't lose 2-0 or more to Newcastle) and we'll hopefully still be in the FA Cup by then. With that in mind, this season still has the potential to be a great one. I don't know if people got a bit giddy about us being in a title race (we weren't) and are now disappointed, but all I wanted out of this season was clear improvement on last season and we have that. For that reason, I'm not too sad about the current state of affairs.

It's worth remembering right now that we finished 2025 top of the PL annual table (based on points per game, 2.16). We don't get a trophy for that, of course, but we should take a lot of heart from it. Despite the difficulties of last season and the injuries of this season, we still managed to be the best team in the country over a 12 month period. For a club on the way back to the top, that's something to hold onto and build from. We'll have weeks like this one again soon, it's just about riding the wave until we're back at the top - whether that's under Pep or somebody else. I'm kinda thinking it'll be Pep until 2027 and then Enrique. But let's see.
A very rational post. But we had talented players then - Kev, Raz, Vinny, Merlin, Ken, Dinho, Sane, Gundo, The Otter, and later joined by Kyle, Jonny Boy, Delphino and Gabby J. Noteable departures Joe, Pab Zab and Yaya. We had a better team spine that was later reinforced by Aymer, Riyad and Rodri and Eddie. We haven't got that abundance of talent we had in 16/17 with the later reinforcements. So, whilst I agree the sentiment and reasoning behind your considered post, I don't believe we have that calibre and quality of player amongst the current team. World class are likely Donna, Rodri ( when fit) and Haaland with the right service. Marc Guehi, I've not watched him enough, and I will give honourable mentions to NOR, Cherki and Matty Nunes - who, fwiw has been my Etihad POTs this year. So I reckon we have a basis but omg do the tactics, set pieces and leaders in the team need development before we can challenge again.

I don't feel like I nees perspective, or balanced reasons, to back Pep. I just do it because that's how I feel. And I'm sticking with that.

There's some very disrespectful, entitled people, who are quick to turn on the best manager we will likely ever have. He has his flaws, but Pep is still the best.

When the 115 charges came out, he could have left, but he backed us and said he was going nowhere. People should remember that.

We don’t match arsenals consistency over the next 4 months.
Right now with players available & the weakness of our midfield you can't bet against Arsenal. Would take there back 4 & midfield over ours (players available)

Some of the knee-jerk stuff posted on here is a fucking scandal and a very difficult read at times.

I'll gladly admit i'm a happy clapper because those of us with any sense of perspective who went through the darker times know just how lucky we are to have this fella leading us.
Nobody is perfect, everybody makes mistakes.

We simply must keep faith with him until he decides to call it a day.

There is not one single manager/coach in the premier league i would rather have at the helm to steer us through these bad waters.

Shit happens. It happened last season and again this season,
but he/we will come through it and anyone who thinks we are entitled to win something every year is off their fucking rocker.

I might be in the minority but I feel weirdly optimistic about things. I look at that squad and I see a lot of talent. Sure there’s a couple of gaps that have been exposed with the injuries but not so many that we need to rip it up and start again. We’ll get players back and go on a winning run to close the season out.

The main counter in this thread seems to be peps tactics. Yeah I think there was problems with that in the last two games but I think that’s pep in a nutshell. He’s idealistic and wants his teams to play their way out of trouble even in the bad times. There’s a few that have struggled but most will learn a lot from a bloody nose or two and be better for it in the long run

All in all, weather this next week or two and get players back and the feel good factor will return. Maybe not in time for a title charge this year but 1 or 2 of the right additions in the summer and we’ll be firmly back on top

The amount of times I've said "fuck em!" and then two minutes later I'm buying tickets for another game or ordering the kids some training gear haha

We love the punishment
