Peter Barnes a true gentleman

Was my favourite player as a kid and seeing him play in my first ever visit to Maine Rd in 1977 has never left me.
He did break my heart also a year later when him and Gary Owen were due to appear at the United Services Reform club in Heywood to meet fans for signatures etc. He didn't show (can't honestly remember the reason) so Gary Owen had to suffice for me.
Gary Owen is a great fella , same stamp as Peter Barnes .

Mine too.

Went to a Junior Blues meet at Stretford Police Station anround then and met Nicky Reid when he took over as Pres from Big Joe.
(I remember they showed a Pele soccer skills vid on the projector).

He asked me who my favourite player was and (well done Nicky) didn’t have the heart to tell me he was transferred to WBA earlier in the week.
My Dad and Grandad were pissing themselves.

Absolutely diamond of a bloke. I used to live round the corner from him before I moved. Saw him and chatted loads of times. Genuinely a true blue.
Was still organising and running the City Old Boys charity team last time I saw him, about 5 years ago.
City through and through.

Having watched the highlights video in this thread, you are most definitely correct! My firsthand memory of the goal appears to have been “recorded over” by the TV highlights, as that video accurately reflects my memory of the chip!
ChicagoBlue, I rather worryingly remember City in the 70s better than I do the last decade.
Anyway, lets just hope Pep can finally win us the title.

I remember the under 21 international v Italy, played at Maine road.
Peter was brilliant even though the rough/violent treatment he received was absolutely criminal.

Was in the North Stand for that game. It was before the seats went in. To see a young kid jink the master of his profession and sit him down was wondrous to those of us with ambitions to be the next Peter Barnes.

My Dad and his Dad, Ken, were mates and he had Peter come to a charity do at our pub one time. My sister was hot for him! I remember her getting dressed up for him and doing her hair and everything! I thought she was daft, of course! “It’s Peter Barnes yer daft sod! What’s he going to see in you? Yer my sister!!”

They actually looked like they’d have made a good couple now I look at the picture with older eyes!! And, they BOTH turned out all right! ;/)
That is a fab photo. I had a shirt and haircut like that.

Peter’s not your sister!

Definitely one of my favourite players from that era. I worked with his wife’s best friend for a few years.

Not telling!
