I watched him in the match at the Athletics Stadium when we had old geezers playing St. Helens for the Bert T memorial game. He must have been t'other side o' 50, and I thought, 'kinell, the lad's still got it!

I know Peter socially and what a great guy he is, so modest, difficult to get him to talk about himself but football, he would chat all night some of the stories he tells are hilarious: My favourite Barnes Goal is when he was put through and then danced around a play dummy Pat Jennings they chip the ball In the net Number 7 in this sequence

If it were not for Aguero, this Barnes goal might top my list.

Loved watching him from The North Stand at MR

When he belted down the wing beat 3000 men and sent in a killer cross!

I am sure Barnsey won Young Player of the Year back in 1976,just after City won the League Cup. And he scored in that final, although it was over shadowed by the Dennis Tueart overhead kick goal later in the game.
Yes and the tv cameras were there showing it live. When presented with the Award he was like a poor rabbit caught in the headlights and words could not come out of his mouth. It really was a bad moment for him but as you say what a player. One of my favourite goals was our 5-0 demolition of Spurs at home on the last day of the season and he dinked the wonderful Pat Jennings for our 5th goal I think it was.Spurs were relegated that day !

My first hero

Played in a 5 aside tournament once, one team consisted of him, his brother Keith and Jim Melrose plus a another couple who could of made it who I new!!

They never moved at all just passed everyone to death as we chased shadows
He must have been 50 then

Pete will tell you that Keith and his other brother Mike were better players and he is deadly serious when he says so

He really is a modest guy and so unassuming with it. I have met him, usually with Tommy Booth, at a fair few functions down the years and they’re quite a double act. Well, Tommy takes the piss out of Peter to be honest!
I used to be him in the playground and my mate was Gordon Hill. I even had his Peter Barnes Trainer. First time I used it I booted it as hard as I could. Let’s just say I can laugh about it now, just as he did when I told him the story!
Peter has had a hip operation a couple of months back and hopefully he’s in great shape once more.

At the time he was with us I argued with Rags that our 2 wingers (Barnes and Tueart) were better than theirs (Coppell and Gordon Hill).
Whoever was right they were all cracking players.

Apart from the Chelsea & Spurs away ones I had the pleasure to see all of those live, the earlier ones in the decade due to my dad (RIP).

Peter organised a match in aid of the children's ward at Warrington about 6 years ago. He had Redmond. Nixon daft as ever Poynton uglier than ever and a few more with Tommy Booth in the bar as usual. Peter kept joking about his aging legs but Asa Hartford was up and down as he used to despite being over 60 and a hole in his heart.
