Peter Barnes

A good pal of mine tells a funny story about chatting up Peter's sister in a Manchester club back in the day.
He'd just signed his first professional contract with York City and fancied himself as a bit of a ladies man. Anyway, he's grafting away laying it on thick that he's a professional footballer for the mighty York City blah, blah blah, only for her to tell him to "Fuck off cos my brother is Peter Barnes who plays for the proper City and England"
Not relevant to Barnes - but this reminds me of a mate of mine many years ago chatting this bird up in a bar. He sidled over to her sat next to her and spent 15 minutes chatting to her. He was getting on great with her and then he asked her if she wanted a drink. She said no as she was on a date.... Sitting next to her was Ryan Giggs. He had just sat there sheepishly letting my mate chat her up for all that time and said nothing. My mate knows nothing about football so didn't even recognise him anyway. This was pre sister-in-law shagging times, perhaps Giggs is more confident when he knows the woman well

What a player Peter Barnes was. I remember probably only my 4th or 5th game and he apparently scored a great goal v Bristol City in 1976 but I missed it as I was still celebrating a goal Tueart scored a year earlier.
Would love to see any footage of when he tore Chelsea apart in the 6-2 win

Sadly, I don't think that footage exists or is viewable these days (if it did exist). The game was an incredible one though. Stats here:https://bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/History/Matches/Match.aspx?id=3232

I remember that game well. He tore Graham Wilkins (aka Butch/Crab/Ray's brother) to shreds. To such an extent it was probably a mercy killing of sorts when Wilkins was sent off later in the game.

Peter Barnes a great player.

Also a really nice bloke.

He used to train our Pub side at the City training complex at Platt Lane once a week.

Used to really enjoy that as a kid with him and Gary Owen.

We had some great players back in the day Peter,Gary Owen Dennis Tueart,Asa Heartfrod,

I remember waiting outside the main entrance for autographs.

Dennis Tueart came out and got in his Car,but he had left a Bag on the top and drove off.The bag fell off, sure it was Boots.

I run after his Car to give him them.

He got out rubbed my Head and thanked me.

Didnt wash for a year
