I can forgive them referring to Alexander-Arnold as "Trent" because all they'll be thinking about is trying to get his name in during fast commentary phases where they might not have much time. "Trent" is one syllable compared to six, it makes sense. Oxlade-Chamberlain is five syllables, admittedly, and they never refer to him by his first name, but his surname rolls off the tongue a lot more fluidly and "Alex" isn't exactly a unique name on a football pitch.
It always used to irritate me when BT Sport's commentators referred to Depay as "Memphis" and Ibrahimovic as "Zlatan" when they played for United because you could tell they'd been quietly asked to promote the brand of both players. But I don't really get that feeling with Alexander-Arnold. The main commentators refer to him by his surname - I think it's just Jenas (who doesn't even work for Sky) and Carragher who opt for his first name.
It's not really that I have a problem with.
I want Carragher off Liverpool games and Neville off United games because they're both part of this new style of presenting that's crept onto Sky Sports in the last decade or so, where after a couple of decades of trying to maintain an illusion of impartial punditry, they now go for naked, transparent partisan coverage. I don't mind the honesty, but it's turned the show into a load of hysterical nonsense that I never bother watching anymore.
Look at the last few weeks. All we've had is Neville complaining endlessly about the situation at United, loudly droning on over their games instead of just shutting up and providing insight when necessary. Then they get him in the studio where it becomes obvious that there's a massive conflict of interest and that he can't bring himself to demand for Solskjaer's sacking, and then the show becomes entirely about Neville's opinion rather than the game.
And Rio Ferdinand is another. He gets too giddy during United games and it affects his analysis. We all know about the famous night when he said Solskjaer could "slam the contract on the table and ask for whatever he wants", or whatever he said. And now any time Ronaldo does literally anything that benefits United, he's there saying that signing him was the greatest idea in the universe and that naysayers should just shut up.
Carragher. So much of Sky Sports' promotional and marketing stuff seems geared towards him being a rival of Neville's. Like, "United and Liverpool legends square off in the studio!" And he also gets too excited during Liverpool games. Would anybody want Micah actually commentating on City games? It would ruin the experience. I know United and Liverpool fans who wish Neville and Carragher would be taken off co-comms.
The big problem is that it's become all about the personal brand of the pundit. Because when Sky Sports or BT Sport show finishes, Neville, Ferdinand, Carragher - they all jump on social media to carry it on. It's a constant 24-hr, cross-platform bombardment. Not satisfied by all the Roy Keane and Micah Richards "content" on your TV? Well here's a YouTube series where they drive to Wembley and annoy each other!
It's like having a bunch of naughty kids in a classroom that need to be given a different seating plan so they each move away from their friends and learn to concentrate.
