I disagree.

I think its the fact that so many comedians have emulated him that makes HIM look dull!!

Personally, off the top of my head, I cannot think of many comedians who used this style - of just telling stuff as it was - before Peter kay did it??

Jason Manford - and I like Jason Manford - is the biggest culprit of emulating Peter Kay.

Humour and comedy is all individual anyway...... I cannot stand Lee Evans, yet most find him funny.

Phoenix Nights and That Peter Kay Thing were both brilliant. Max and Paddy was made for the people who thought Bottom was funny.....utter shite. The problem was that he left the two other writers who made Phoenix Nights with him and went on his own for Max and Paddy - hence the childish humour, and none of the decent stuff from Phoenix Nights.

His stand up is probably funny once, but after that it is pish. His stand up definitely has a sell-by date, and it is well past that.

Comedy for me died when the took Cannon and Ball off TV :( Tragic.

When Peter Kay broke onto the scene several years ago he was a breath of fresh air. Pheonix Nights was brilliant, Top of the Tower in Blackpool was class but since then what has he done? He was like a one hit wonder so to speak. He needs new material and ASAP to save his career.
 
I think its cheap to slag him as an artist stating his material as a reason he is poor, his bag is the rough, tough, cheesy, basic, no-nonsense up north life that so many of us remember vividly. Because he uses that it doesn't make him old hat or a crap comic. If people laugh with him and go out WANTING TO LAUGH while remembering the forgotten details of a simpler life then so be it. Its not the material that make a good comic great, its the dreaded funny bones, Tommy Cooper is often stated as someone who had the audience laughing before his franky ridicules material started, Why did he, because he had laughs seeping out of him, people WANTED to laugh with him...

How about the great Monty Python? Often the hero's of more alternative style educated comedy fans. Was a team of Philosophers playing a football match really funny? Was that truly funny material? Well no its obviously not, but funny it definitely was, people WANTED to laugh with them:

I heard that bitter idiot Rufus Hound slagging off Peter Kay because all he does is "remember things" well yes he does but the people going to see P.K are often laughing before they get into the building, you cant necessarily say that of Rufus can you? Top level comedy is about more than gags, Jimmy Carr is just a vulgar straighter Jackie Mason a dead pan gag teller, he isn't naturally funny, he just writes good gags, eventually though, people tire of gag tellers, P.K will be here twenty years from now, he doesn't over expose himself, he rests, he does different stuff. He is a great comic.

To judge a comedian 'not as funny as Manford' is like telling a footballer he is slightly less popular than Gary Neville,or telling a woman she would be the spit of Susan Boyle if she made more of an effort.

Dave Spikey wrote a lot of that peter kay thing and phoenix nights
Kay would come up with the ideas and spikey would write the scripts(along with Neil Fitzmaurice)
After the 2nd series Spikey said he didnt get the credit he deserved and him and Kay fell out and have not worked together since and it shows badly for both of them
