Play for Macclesfield Town for £20k

Shame they can't really do it as they desperately need the money, hope they get out the mess they are in.

They've pulled the offer because you could basically bet on the score or on yourself to score an own goal and influence the outcome. Shame as it is a good idea and I think if someone paid the 20k they would take it seriously, but it is open for abuse

and who would likely take the other side of this bet?

(an idiot friend?)

I'm not so sure that this would be the way to make a betting coup - especially as no bookmaker doing their due diligence is likely to be taking any action on something like this.

- and it's a shame the club felt the need to grovel to the FA and the Conference over their 'lapse in judgement', although away from any imaginary betting scams the whole concept is a little 'unprofessional' if amusing, were there a taker for 20,000 quid, ehehe

Hi lads, first post here but I come in peace :)

This seems dangerous to me. Glad they have retracted the offer, anything could have happened. An off the pace player going in for a tackle, anything could have happened.

I doubt it's anything to do with betting. Bookies aren't stupid, they would've latched onto this from the first minute. Any time anyone tried to put a bet on themselves doing something like this, they'd either insert a clause saying "*not for Macclesfield Town" or they'd just flat out refuse to accept the bet. The reason they pulled it will be a mixture of not wanting to face the negative publicity, and because the FA would've been on a mission against them for the reasons listed above (potential to injure a professional player, potential to ruin a competitive match, they would have to take on legal responsibility for your safety during the match, etc)
