Premier League ponders play-offs for Champions League

The top four teams in England have been the same for four seasons
The Premier League is considering a proposal to introduce a play-off for the fourth Champions League place.
The top four currently enter the tournament but the new idea would mean the teams from fourth to seventh playing in a mini-knockout competition.
BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar said the Premier League has been presented with "a number of ideas for altering the competition's format".
But there will be no changes for three years as the next TV deal is in place.
Farguhar added: "Any changes would need the agreement of 14 of the 20 clubs. But the League says there are many options and nothing has been decided."

What do you think about a play-off for fourth place?
The move is widely thought to be seen as a way of increasing competition in the Premier League because Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have filled the top four positions in five out of the past six seasons.
The proposal was raised at a meeting of all 20 clubs on 4 February and will be considered again when they next meet in April.
The top four in the Premier League is the same so far this season, although Manchester City, Tottenham and Aston Villa are putting concerted pressure on Liverpool, who are fourth.
Two years ago the Premier League was widely condemned for a proposal to play a 39th game of the domestic season in Asia.
The Football Association, the sport's world governing body Fifa and European body Uefa all rejected the idea and the Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) condemned the proposal as being motivated by money, dubbing it Gam£ 39.

Between 4th and 5th, maybe. Finishing 7th and getting in the CL is a disgrace.

cynical money making bollocks to drag the season out a little more. agree if the likes of us, spurs and villa were'nt threatening this would never have been brought up

plus i thought it was the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE to be fair this competition has been completely watered down letting 3rd and 4th in but up to 7th placed in the league, f... off

haven't Everton and Newcastle both finished in the top 4 fairly recently? I know more often than not its the big 4 in the first 4 places but it's not every single time.

Rather than have play offs, why not give the 4th spot to the FA Cup winners. Then, in theory, the country's best knock-out team could be part of the Champs League. It would also revitalise the FA Cup. If a top 3 side wins the cup, then give the spot to the Carling Cup winner (if the same apllies, then give it to 4th place).

If this was the case, it makes an even bigger mockery out of the champions league.

I understand that there must be a few extra teams in the competition, other than the winner, but for it to include some one form the top 7 removes the prestige of getting into the comp, when you know any tom, dick or harry could get into it by having a good run to the end of the season.

It also makes the UEFA cup look even more like a runners up comp, as if the don't get into the CL, they have to make do with the that.

I think if you get knocked out of the CL, its tough sh*t, and your out, not get a pass into the UEFA, as this makes it look like a joke competition.

They're making no secret of their desire to maintain the status quo, it's disgraceful.
