Player thread: Dedryck Boyata (2013/14)

Good move for the lad.

A season or two at Celtic playing regularly at CB and I think he'll be back in the Premiership.

another home grown player gone, the club are going to be busy filling these slots if milner makes it 3 in the not too distant future

good luck dedryck

Deadly Dedryck leaving means that we no longer have a club trained homegrown player in our senior squad. If we'd like to have a 25-man squad list in the CL next season, we would need 4 of them (and 4 other homegrowns), which is impossible, of course.

But the main thing that remains is the limit of 17 foreigners, the rest can be fulfilled with youngsters. I don't think we are in for a new (especially foreign) CB in the summer, so there should be space for Denayer.

Best of luck Derek!

Doesn't 'Homegrown' players include graduates from the Academy, So wouldn't we have Denayer, Rekik and Lopez in the squad (if they don't get shipped out again)?

It's good move for him and it's a shame we've not been able to make a bit more money from him. He's been a loyal servant to the club despite literally filling a quota for the past few years which is a poor way to treat our young players. He's just not been good enough unfortunately. The best thing about this move is that it leaves a slot available for Denayer, though I hope he isn't used so infrequently. It's also a good opportunity to gauge how good Denayer's season has been with Celtic - if Boyata shines then we know to take his performances with a pinch of salt, if he struggles we know that he has indeed impressed as much as people say.

Denayer is a class act and showed as much with his performance for Belgium. A very mature and very comfortable player in possession. I wonder if he'll get tested in the DM role - I'd like to see that in pre-season as well as giving him opportunities at CB.

Surprised at the reception he's getting on here. I know he's home grown but whenever he played he was calamitously bad to the point of it being malicious.

That's just bollocks.....in his most recent games, for the majority of the time,he looked calm and assured and comfortable in possession.
Celtic will give him the consistency to improve his game and i'm sure we will see the player many believed,at an early age,he would develop into.

As well as the relationship we are developing with Celtic,we will have a significant sell on as well as the buy back clause, hence the fee.
