Player Topic: Willy Caballero (2015/2016)

I only recall one flap and then made up for it moments later with a great reaction stop.

He made some good saves but was nowhere for the goal. He goes to come out then goes back and is caught kind of flat footed but as a team we should have dealt with the cross better.

Noticed that on the goal, hard to tell if he'd have been better coming or not. The cross should never have came in in the first place, collective lack of concentration cost us there.

He made a couple of good saves on Saturday, but I thought he should've dealt with the cross that led to their goal. I presume he wasn't expecting Demichelis to allow Long a free jump though.

Sterling was caught out by the runner on the free kick and then just stands and watches and Long is head and shoulders above everyone,he wanted it more. I think if Willy would have come out he would still have scored as he isn't physically strong enough to smash players out of the way.

I blamed Nico for that but got my CBs mixed up. If MDM had jumped he should have risen as much as Tom DeLong and Willy wouldn't have been bothered. We might have turned the corner where every fuckin' mistakes costs a goal!

He didn't just stand and watch, he tried chasing the player initially but had no hope of catching him.

How do you reckon he rates compared with other PL 2nd choice keepers, for e.g. Vorm, Ospina, McCarthy, Begovic, Valdez, ..?
I think we would benefit from an upgrade.

I think it's hard to tell given he's never and will likely never get a run of games with us so doesn't have the opportunity to play himself into form.

I don't rate Ospina at all and Valdes is awful at commanding his area from what I've seen so the same issue Willy has had would likely be the case with Valdes.

For once, parent club Manchester City is eyeing one of New York City FC players.

In what some would call a surprising development, English Premier League giants Manchester City are interested in NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders, according to The Sun.

Manchester City, who currently sit tied atop the Premier League, are bringing Saunders in for a month to have a look at the 34-year-old goalkeeper. The Sun speculates Saunders could be offered a chance to serve as the backup to Joe Hart, the starting goalkeeper for Manchester City and England’s national team, depending on how well the trial run goes.

Hart injured his hamstring during a Champions League match against Juventus last week, leaving questions for last season’s Premier League runners-up. Manchester City has relied on 34-year-old backup Wilfredo Caballero and recently called in Richard Wright, who hasn’t played in the top English league in nearly nine years.

Saunders was one of the few bright spots from NYCFC’s inaugural season in MLS. Despite being plagued with one of the league’s most unstable defenses, the MLS veteran led the league with 123 saves and boasted a 65.4 save percentage

Starting to get some confidence and show how good he is. Don't think there is much to choose between WC and JH, the only difference is one is understandably rusty from lack of game time.

There is a huge difference and one that even Pellegrini acknowledges. Caballero is one of Pellers favourites and was brought in to challenge Joe after the latter had gone through a bit of a dodgy patch. We all know how Pellers likes his favourites and the fact that Joe has not just kept his place, but made it pretty much unattainable, is a testament to his professionalism and character.

How did he play yesterday?

Very well, wasn't really tested first half, a little busier in the second, did everything that needed doing well, no flaps and was very alert on one occasion to race out of his box to stop a counter.

I think he rates them both roughly the same, he has always maintained that there is no official number 1 at the club. Of course Hart gets more game time but I think that is because he was already first choice when Pellegrini arrived and he probably didn't want to risk being unpopular by dropping a fans favorite. When he did drop Hart the media were whinging and moaning for weeks until he put him back in goal. If there wasn't so much resistance I think Hart would've been replaced by now.
