Player's name on the back of the shirt

Wasn't the last we did this in Division 2? I'm not fussed over the idea personally, I can imagine it'd be a throwback for some, but whenever I see highlights of the games in '99 and not having names on the back of the shirt it reminds me of how low we dropped and how far we've come.

Or could it be the so called football pundits don,t know who the players are, it makes it easier for them to try and get their names right (sometimes)

I wish they would take the names off the back of the shirts. I can't see the benefit really, apart from shirt sales. I don't like it when players start pointing to their name on the back when they score. Was it all their own work? It just looks selfish. What about their teammates, the pass, the club? All players play a part in a win.

Why does Fabregas have Cesc on the back of his Barca but at Arsenal he had Fabregas?

Nicknames or first names have to be cleared by the league hence why Aguero had to ask to have Kun on as well. Other leagues like Spain let you have whatever. Auroe has had 4 or 5 different name formations on his Atletico days

How would we know who they are if they didn't have their names on the back?

We could adopt a "Chris Coleman / Alan Shearer" naming system ....

... so Zabaleta would have "Paulo" on his back,
... Lescott would have "Julian" on his back,
... Silva would have "Villa" on his back,
etc

^^ Nah, all players have 1 spare. When Kolarov bust his nose the other week he changed shirts and still had his correct name and number on the back of his new one.
Not necessarily, Kompany played in shirt 50 in the derby a few years back after injury.

The last time I can think that a team didn't wear names in the Premier League was a game involving Aston Villa and West Ham, where there was a kit clash and Villa wore an old kit with numbers only.
