Am I right in thinking that when a player is transferred and a club receives a transfer fee, you are actually buying the right to the players registration?

If this is correct, given that Tevez has breached his contract by refusing to play, presumably this gives City the ability to sack him for gross misconduct or cancel his contract because he breached it and therefore not pay him anything. BUT we keep hold of his registration until someone stumps up the £50m to transfer that registration.

Or can it not work like that?

It sounds logical but I'm afraid that it's a lot more complicated than that in practice.
Best we could do would be to release him and the sue for the loss of profit that his actions brought about (damages).
Trouble is that you need to prove damages and even if you do then actually getting the money is very difficult as it's a civil action that would likely span different jurisdictions.

Best we can hope for IMO is to sell him quick in the January window (we won't get much for him now that he's ruined his professional reputation) and then try to sue for the difference between what we get and what we would have got if he wasn't such an arse.

What does that have to do with his FA / FIFA registrations? I've not seen anyone who actually knows the answer post yet, although there are 14 Tevez threads so if someone would care to copy pasta the answer, I'd appreciate it, I'm too lazy to go trawling.
