One of my mates who watches American sports was telling me about how players in the NFL take voluntary pay cuts to help their teams with salary caps (their teams have a set amount they can spend annually on salaries). I know in the NFL, all the power is in the hands of the team owners and there is a lot more equity in football.
Brings me to my question about certain players.
Take Mangala for example: On massive wages, but seems like someone who really wants to make it...and with us. I believe that given time, it will click for him and he would've been afforded more time if he didn't cost so damn much! Now that we have Pep, I'd assume players would bend over backwards to be a part of the project.
Could some highly motivated guys like Mangala take a drastic step and tear up their existing contract and sign a new deal paying them less? Then if they turn out to be great, negotiate again? I know agents would die at the thought, but if the player wants to do it...
Sorry for the long-winded post about something purely hypothetical. Just got me thinking and wanted to know what everyone else thought.
