Andy Goram, Steve Kinsey, Nicky Reid, David Fairclough, Norman Whiteside, Rodney Marsh, Ade Coker, Kaz Deyna and the entire Leeds first team squad from 1979 (Late Eddie Gray era). Nutmegged Bryan Stevenson (Welsh Intl full back) in a game and he spent the rest of the game trying to fuck me up! I was mates with Terry Connor, who is black fella who is Mick McCarthy's right hand man (he was a good striker) and shared the upstairs of a house with John Lukic (GK), who had a flash Capri that he used to drive us around in!
Also, I played in a Charity Match with my Dad at Moss Rose with some big names from yesteryear (most of whom I can't remember), but Bobby Charlton was the biggest draw, I think. Second time I ran into him...both times he was a twat! Gave me a mouthful for not tracking back!! ;-) He was a friend of my dear departed Dad, so I couldn't say anything!
Ah, the good old days of growing up playing in Manchester Schoolboys games and with a few pro clubs as a teenager. (City...very cliquey, just like England Schoolboys, Sunderland...brilliant, Leeds...Jimmy Armfield brought me from Sunderland with him..they already had 39 pros on the books when they asked me to sign pro so I chose to do my A levels, which is why it was easier to play locally for Oldham...small time, but excellent youth coaching, before coming to States to play).
Back in the late 70s - early 80s, the standard of local football was brilliant and loads of lads from the Gtr Manc schoolboys were getting trials everywhere. Sad to see so few Manc lads getting to the top these days. All part of the global catchment area, I guess, but it was always nice to recognize a familiar face running out onto a big stadium on a Saturday afternoon.
I often wonder if I played against lads from Bluemoon. Sounds like a few of you were pretty decent, so maybe. Oh to be 16 again, eh?!
