Playing out from the back (The 'Ederson' Factor)

Just seen this from the Asian Cup:

And it seems he has form for it:

I always say it’s like the difference between rugby league and rugby union.

In Union the ball is in play for an average of 30% of the game. There are many instances in the game where players are stood around for minutes at a time. In rucks it can go on for twenty phases of fat forwards running two metres from the last one. When a team gets the ball near their own line they hoof it as far up field as possible to get the ball as far away from their own in-goal as possible.

In League the ball is in play an average of 72% of the game (that’s more than football). There are something like nine times as many passes compared to Union. There are very few instances where everyone is stood around doing nothing for ages. When a team gets the ball near their own line they play it out from the back and take it forward with passing rather than by hoofing it.

Spot on. It is a question of risk. In Union the groundwork through rucks means a turnover is more likely than in league where if you are in trouble near your goal line you go to ground clinging the ball. Percentages of a turnover are lower. There's also the penalty factor in union that means you want to be in opposition territory even without the ball. In league if you kicked it away it is another set of defending tackles which is energy sapping.

Linking to football. Most managers have felt the risk is high of conceding if the ball is near their goal so they punt it up the pitch to reduce the risk. Pep and others before him look at it like chess. It is almost like dangling the carrot. Use the keeper, keep the ball and attract the opposition onto you to create space elsewhere. When teams do that and we pass out we almost always are right at them.

The best teams we have faced tend to leave Ederson and block the ball out. They know he isn't going to dribble up the pitch (though one day he might) so block his other options and press them. I can't remember who it wad against recently when we were playing it around the 6 yard box and then Mahrez was set free and put his shot just wide.

We have seen keepers try to emulate others down the years. Jennings used every part of his body to save shots, before that people just basically used their hands

Schmeichel used to come off his line big and huge. Watching old videos some goalies were rooted to their spot. After than you see more sprinting off their line

When Lloris came to Spurs i never see a goalie charge 30-40 yards off his line to clear danger, it probably saved us lots of goals. The sweeper keeper craze happened more in the league

Ederson keeping the ball and feeling comfortable is great. I used to say 25 years ago all footballers should know how to play football not just play at their position. Watching some of these goalies is like trying to teach an old dog new tricks
