Have noticed it is humming of late, but now I have noticed slow leaking both sides. From the nuts. Which way to I tighten them. Clockwise or anti? Could it get worse? Would good tape wrapped around it stop the leak?

Turn off the central heating, turn down the gate valves (clockwise) undo the large nuts that fasten onto the pump itself by turning them unticlockwise. Bowl underneath/old towel etc. rather than try and tighten them, go to a plumbers merchant (poss b+q) ask for 1+half inch pump washers. And replace with new. If you do replace the old ones, have them to hand before starting. Then, fasten the large nuts back up, undo the gate valves slowly anticlockwise, ideally using 2 spanners so the middle doesn't turn aswell, and check for leaks. Make sure you know where your stoptap is and good luck :)

The pump can tilt up and downwards. When I do this (and the pump is not sitting level) the leak is worse. Is there any chance I can just tighten the nuts and the leak will go? Or is there a problem inside. To be honest I ain't good at doing what u said above

As above really, you should have a gate valve either side of the pump, turn them both off and you should be able to remove the pump, you've no need to touch the wiring just leave alone.

just nip the nuts back up tight with some grips if its leaking, the pump should not be movable with your hands.


In my experience, some gate valves may pass water, its a heating drain down if this is the case.

As has been said though isolate it and replace the washers, just tightening it up isn't likely to prove a long term solution.
