Afternoon all,

I’ve recently been unwell with what I thought was Flu or a bad chest infection but had an X-Ray + CT scan and the doctors have confirmed it’s pneumonia.

Last week I was completely wiped out, constant fever, coughing up loads of vile tasting mucus (I’ve had flu and coughed up some rank stuff but this was on another level, it actually had an ‘infected’ sort of taste to it), sweating buckets during the night and generally feeling horrendous.

I was given a course of antibiotics which I finished and they have now gave me another 10 days worth, I feel much better than what I did last week but still don’t feel 100%.

Has anyone had any experience with pneumonia and how long it takes to fully recover? Obviously it depends on the individual but would be interested to know after having it because it’s brutal!

I had it a few years back. I can’t remember exactly how long I was out of action for but it cured my tennis elbow.
I was in bed for a couple of weeks, like you sweating profusely, feeling shit and coughing up all sorts. I hardly ate as well so the recovery was as much about building up my strength so I’d estimate 6-8 weeks from taking to my bed to feeling like myself again.

Were you given a course of antibiotics?

I got it October 2017. I was given antibiotics and the blood tests were clear by mid-November (which was just as well as I was, flying to the USA for Thanksgiving) but I was still struggling a bit 6 months later, feeling a bit wiped out all the time. My GP said that was pretty normal.

Had it about 25 years ago. Went to the docs who said that I had a chest infection and gave me a weeks antibiotics. Shortly after we went on a traditional Boxind day hike up and down Lantern Pike and round Kinder. I felt wiped out after finishing and coughing my way round. Went back to the GPs to complain the the infection hadn't cleared up. That was the first time he mentioned pneumonia and told me I should have spent Christmas & New Year wrapped up at home. Took about a month to get rid of the cough.

My lad had it recently. Antibiotics seemed to do the trick. Struggling with a bit of fitness and associated back pain but other than that seems to be over the worst of it.
Lasted maybe 2 weeks but the other effects have kicked in since.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Blimey, get well soon. Glad you’re feeling a little better.

Had it in 2015, had a coughing fit outside in the cold & collapsed at work, got rushed to hospital. I was off work for 3 months, tried to go back after 2 but I wasn’t ready. The coughing & wheezing really takes it out of you not to mention the amount of fluid produced which almost drowns your lungs.
I had 2 lots of anti b’s over a 2 month period, I had the flu jab the next winter at the doctors suggestion and I’ve had it every year since.
When you’re younger Pneumonia sounds like a bad cold or flu, but once you’ve had it you can understand why it kills elderly people with the strain it puts on your chest, lungs & heart.
Get well anyway, you’re over the worst of it.

Home made chicken soup, fresh orange juice or lemon juice with honey, anyway lots of hydration, rest and recuperation, take the antibiotics and keep coughing it up! Get well soon.

Had it January 2025. I'm 64 and took me about 6 weeks to fully recover. I went back to work after about 3 but still was breathless when walking. I do bit of running and took me months to get back to trying that.

Keep going back to GP if not feeling better and rest (if you can manage it between coughing etc) is your friend. Good luck mate

My aunty had this a couple of years ago. She was delusional whilst on the meds and was hospital bound due to its severity. She was convinced the hospital floor was opening up and little people climbing out trying to grab her. Ghosts appearing in the hospital ward. She remembers none of it after she got better.

Get well soon pal.
