King Richard II (d 1400) is often presented, even by reputable historians, as having mental issues.
No one in his own time said anything of the kind, not even his worst enemies. The first person to suggest it was Bishop Stubbs, a Regius Professor of Modern History (not medieval) at Oxford, in 1866, that is 466 years after Richard's death.
