Until the 1960s the town of Berwick upon Tweed was officially at war with Russia. After the Union of England and Scotland in 1707 any declaration of war against a foreign power specified England and Scotland and also the ancient principality of Berwick upon Tweed which frequently changed hands during border wars. After the Crimean war in 1855 and signing the armistice mention of the town was stopped. Technically then Berwick was still at war with Russia. When this anomaly was discovered the Russian ambassador visited Berwick, declared hostilities a draw, and signed a peace treaty.
