Porto (h) post-match thread

I personally think the fitness of the team is a bit fucked, more so than they’re letting on. Players seem to drop in and out randomly.
Keep your eye on the players this year, I think there’s going to be some very bad injuries across the board, not just here but all teams.

that’s what they get for treating them like slaves without breaks and straight into a more intense than usual schedule.

just think, if they weren’t so desperate to crown the dippers last year they could have finished it earlier and give the players a proper warm up for the season

For fucks sake the lot of wet fanny wipes, you.

We've just won against a tough physical cheating side and the ref, with a makeshift XI due to a long list of injuries and lack of preseason. But you bedwetters cannot avoid having digs at Gündogan, García, Pep; even Fernandinho's been called stupid by the whinging bitches.

Great result, quality golazos, Sergio and Ilkay getting minutes; and the media is seething as a consequence, which is a good indication of the proceedings.

Next our hammer friends and the newborn chosen one.

After some thinking after the game I think we need to change some things. The porto team set up like how leicester did with 541 and was very compact and deep. Our midfielders could not get into the game because there was no space in the middle of the field. We can talk about ferran and foden changing the game but we cannot forget that porto had to attack after 2-1. It just feels impossible to break these type of teams down. We can’t just keep hoping we score from some individual moments there has to be a system that works for sure because we will definitely play more teams that will play 5 at the back. We didn’t create a lot of chances but at least we didn’t get countered a lot. Pep has to come up with a new plan even if it means we turn into a long ball team to bypass the midfield because it is usually packed. I would not mind if we also start giving up possession on purpose because passing the ball between defenders will not lead to anything. I don’t mind if we start playing counter football for teams that play 5 at the back because we are not creating a lot of chances

If you play Rodri - who I think is superb at mopping up the ball and is always available for a pass - then you have to play KdB, Bernardo or Foden with him. This is the only way to get around his total lack of pace.
That was my criticism, he wan't available for the pass lass night. Numerous times his marker is closing down the passing lanes to him and he simply was not fit enough or dynamic enough to make himself space. The defence resorted to passing sideways between themselves or lumping it forward. To compound that, Gundo, Bernie, Mahrez and Stirling were not helping him, dropping short or otherwise compensating for the fact he was being marked out the game. That first half was a horrific display from our midfield. Foden and Torres took two minutes to show what energy and finding space can do.

What if Pep played all 3 of Foden, Bernie and Kevin in a flat midfield 3?

Do we need a pure DM style player like Rodri, Gundogan, Dinho?

I said as much a couple of weeks ago. It's not as if Rodri or Gundogan are strong defensively anyway and playing them both always negates our attacking strength so we end up neither great defensively, nor going forwards.

Was hoping to see the Baywatch babes running on to save all the divers and the "out of his depth " ref. Truly shocking refereeing especially Garcia's yellow card. If that was a yellow - it was barely a free kick - then Pepe should be shot at dawn for his assault on Sterling for the penalty.

I don't have an issue with their manager having a go at Pep during the game or being vocal / passionate about his players, but when it's done it's done. Shake hands and move on.

you have to admire Pepe has made a career of being a top level shithouse.

The first half was very slow and we were picked off ridiculously for that goal, i didnt enjoy Cancelo's performance at all either, he looked very poor. Second half a marked improvement and the pace obviously helped us turn the screw. Not a bad result for the first game in europe but the first half fits a pattern that is increasing in frequency.....

the ref was shit yes, but i was on a 'neutral' website following it and have to say the general comments were that the ref was just totally shit, not 'corrupt' or something. If he was so corrupt, he had ample opportunity to overturn our penalty decision, however wrong you make think it would have been. Many fans on here now see any slight derision or criticism as big media corruption or any decisions against us as uefa and liverpool conspiracies. Not denying some shady shit exists but some people need to grow up.

As long as we are getting results it's all good but the level of play has been really disappointing, we look miles off our average performance from a few years ago.
The injuries and the farcial circumstances in terms of number of games of course don't help but still it's something to worry about. If the results stop coming with this sort of performance there will be a lot of uproar.

As for the game, it was similar to Arsenal. Game that could've gone either way but Porto didn't take their chances when they had to and we punished them with 2 set pieces.

Against a better team, we might have struggled to gain control, but for the moment, the result was all that matters.
I thought Gundogen was good, and Walker excellent, but how many more goals would Sterling score if he actually shot at goal, rather than slowing down, and waiting for contact?

Good that Aguero got off the mark for the season,
(Good that he smashed-in the penalty too)
Worryingly bad defending for their goal, and terrible by Cancelo for that in particular, and most of his game was poor. Too many heavy touches; I hate defenders putting their hands behind their backs; and, imho, he looks very far from a £60m player.
Wierd referreeing and strange that the VAR decision on the penalty went our way.
Mediocre performance which improved as the game went on, with a great result and superb 3rd goal, which should help Torres to settle in. If a rag or dipper had scored that, the media would be touting it for goal of the month.
All in all, glad to win a scrappy game, highlighted by our 2nd and 3rd goals - and, of course, some good old-fashioned brutality from our old friend Pepe.

Played ok’ish. First half there was not enough movement from Bernie and Gundo to get into space to receive the ball, which slowed everything down too much. Kun is not yet anywhere near fit and can’t press to anything like we need so the whole first half was flat. Also the ref made it nigh on impossible for us to pressure them as every time we tackled it was a yellow card (5 for us in the match and I can’t remember one that was worthy of a yellow). Second half I thought Gundo was much better and surprised he went off (Rodders would have been my pick). Phil and Torres gave us much needed energy and will have to play at the weekend. Finally Mahrez has one of the best touches I have ever seen, shame he is such a greedy player as there is a lot of talent there

Even when we went 1-0 down, I wasn’t worried and we played better against them than the rags would have done. Wasn’t a great performance, but we did the job required.

Absolutely pathetic VAR sh*tshow with how long it took to review the penalty decision however.
