Could well be the shortest thread on the forum, but there are so many posts I read on here slagging the BBC off, that (and I can’t believe I’m even writing this) maybe it would be a good idea to list what the BBC does well, and why the licence fee offers good value.

Just to state what I think is the obvious, I am as critical as anyone on here of BBC Football coverage, esp online, and their anti-City, pro-red bias. But I’m talking here about everything else.

Off the top of my head…

Radio 1, esp the Essential Mix
Some 6 Music shows
Total Sport on Radio Manchester
Today, World At One, PM Radio 4
Made in England doc about Powell & Pressburger
Brian Cox Science shows
Lakes with Simon Reeve
Shetland
Deliverance on bbc2 last week
Shawshank Redemption bbc3 last week
Those Who Kill and the other Scandi noirs
Just one thing - Michael Mosely
Liam Gallagher at Reading Festival
Glasto coverage
Athletics coverage
TMS commentary
Mark Champmans 5 live Saturday show
Fighting Talk 5 live
Misadventures of Romesh
Dads Army advert-free repeats.
Norton show, depending on guests
Would I Lie To You?
Interesting science articles on the website.

Anything else anyone sees value in?

For me:

The majority of 6Music's output
Radio 2 evening and overnight output
Some new comedy such as "Alma's Not Normal" and "The Cleaner".
Some new drama such as "Vienna Blood" and "Magpie Murders".
Monday night quiz night on BBC2.
Have I Got News For You

The downside:

Sport app and contributors.
Mrs Brown
Children in Need / Comic Relief overkill
Strictly and other peak time very light entertainment shows.
The One Show

BBC is a great institution.

The more I see the desperate attempts from the Tories to Farage to shut it down the more I realise we need it now more than ever, especially in a world of disinformation from social media.

I watched Lucan on the iPlayer today, kids watched CBeebies, regularly listen to Radio 2,4 and 5live (best for match commentary) try and catch 10pm News and Newsnight when I can and also MOTD if the Hammers win, so don’t often get to watch that.

The problem is they are spending our money on the dross as well as any good stuff.

The stuff that they do well, they do very well. David Attenborough is without a peer when it comes to wildlife programmes. MOTD is still the leading highlights programme (it just needs a reboot, with some fresh faces). And their news coverage is generally good.
