Post Match Thread: Election 2017

Whilst I get the feeling of optimism from Corbyn supporters, I do find the fact the tories still won the most seats despite taking the country through years of punitive austerity measures, out of the EU and cuts to public services quite a damning indictment of the opposition.

There will always be a swing from one side to the other as everyone wants a change when the government in charge does the inevitable thing of not being able to please enough people or people get tired of it. Given how much this one has pissed people off and seriously hurt a lot of the electorate though, it really shouldn't have taken much to oust them.

In the event of a rerun within the next 12 months Labour will win. As long as they keep up the momentum ( no pun intended ) on social media etc - the Tories are being ridiculed in the traditional media so the news that their traditional vote absorbs - TV news - newspapers - they are seeing a party in disarray doing deals that are going to rebound on the Ulster situation - Brexit issues rumbling on - they will stagger from issue to issue looking like a rabble and are - for now - mortally wounded

You have to admit mate, it's to say the very least, a bit one sided in here. And a jokey comment like that is pretty bloody innocuous when compared to a lot of the stuff. if you go banning people for jokey comments, you'd have to ban half the posters.
If it's one-sided it's because all those Toryboys who would have been yah boo suck it up on here if they'd got the result they expected have become shy Tories. Meanwhile, the "losers" are having internecine spats about how to get that overall majority while the Tory party seems to be doing its best to make sure they can go for the underdog vote next time. It's not Corbyn and Labour who've made Britain a laughing stock and starting to look an economic disaster zone. Even the Tory party's famed reputation for ruthlessness is out of the window because they're frit. Actually (wait for it) after the Scottish input they won't dare be Ruthless.

in 12 months time they wont have the same leader, wont have the social care, triple lock, fox hunting policies. so it will be a very different election for the conservatives. only a fw months ago labour weren't exactly in a great situation. despite the worst campaign ever and austerity labour still didn't win, i can't see it getting much better for them imo

If thats the case why are they so scared of the prospect?

In 12 months time the economy is predicted to still be tanking - Brexit talks will be to the fore and whichever way they are going its likely 50% of the population won't be happy with the way they are going given the referendum result and who will be their leader? Bumbling Boris? Dave " I can't see what just happened " Davies?

scared ?. I wouldn't have an election because right now i think it would lead to more instability and more problems. we have brexit negotiations coming up, what happens if its the same result or similar we end up with the same problems. there wasnt appetite for this election, i dont think there is for another one either.

it sounds like you want the economy to tank and get worse to say ' i told you so'..... the worst election campaign maybe ever and labour still didn't win.....

why is it whenever questions are raised the comeback is always " ..... you seem to want things to get worse? " Of course I bloody don't but Leavers and the odd person out there who still supports May have to accept that the likelihood is that it will happen given the decisions made in the last 12 months. Not my doing but yeah the people I know who voted a certain way and who moan about consequences will get a big " I told you so " off me because thats what I expect from them if things were the other way.

With the appointments ir reappointment if Jeremy Hunt and Michael Gove says that this bitch is going to do as much damage as possible in as little time as possible. Sit tight UK and hold on for your lives......literally

It just shows what contempt this govt has for its public. Along with getting into bed with the DUP and risking the NI peace process they are taking themselves down a dark alley with no return. Even changing the leader, changing a few policies and having a better campaign won't help them next time.

The DUP thing is shameful. There's been a prevailing liberal consensus among the political classes for a generation or so. May has broken ranks. Showing her true colours. I despise anyone or anything that threatens that liberal consensus.

Part that gets me is that the DUP still has links with the UVA. Nithing about our government being made up of terrorists though, although we were certainly told what happened during the 80s when a certain opposition leader was years ahead of his time intalking peacefully about the conflicts.
Funny how stories are twisted.

The point i was trying to make is Hunt is back on board in quick fashion which can only be bad for the NHS and probably music to Bransons ears

Reply was meant ti be for @jay_mcfc

Scorched earth? We'll go down but take the NHS with us (or at least make it more difficult to piece it together again). No motivation except the ideological "public bad private good" (and our funders are the private companies that benefit).

Same with free schools, leaving local authorities unable to plan properly for school places. Can we see free school accounts? No, even though it's public money. That's a huge scandal.

So now the Tories are ripping up the manifesto and ending austerity, funny that. Perhaps they'll introduce free university tuition for all and free childcare places for 2-4 year olds?

For heavens sake woman, go!

You obviously did read the pre-election thread much.

Labour would certainly win if there's an election in the next few months. If the tories can avoid an election until 2018 that might change. The Labour PLP is still hopelessly divided, the old wounds will eventually re-open. Corbyn will be able to have plenty of fun at May's expense in the next few weeks, but eventually he'll run out of steam. He's a campaigner, not a PM in waiting. The tories will replace May, although its difficult to see which of the possible candidates would be any better.

The biggest threat to the tories after the initial fuss has died down is Brexit. They'll struggle to come out of the initial negotiations with any credibility. The best thing they could do is to try to agree some sort of cross party concensus. Tie Labour to their failure.
