Said this to my Geordie mate last week. Lot more work to be done, otherwise it could be just a flash in the pan season.
They’re actually ahead of schedule (and certainly ahead of where we were when we were undertaking the transition from ‘also rans’ to contenders in the league), but this is where you see the impact of having a few lesser players in key areas.
When you’re getting tired (mentally and physically), after fighting the immense battle all season to get to and stay in CL spots, pure quality (Kev, Bernardo, Rodri, Haaland, Foden, Stones, Ake) has to get you over the line in some games, especially the last few.
And if you have quite a few serviceable but generally workman players in key positions, there is little quality to drag you over the line. When they’re tired, there’s no moments of brilliance to take the pressure off.
Their recruitment this summer—regardless of whether they get CL—will be key to whether they can sustain this challenge to the establishment.
They need at least three top six quality players to have a chance of consistently getting CL football, which is the bare minimum to be able to attract one or two very high quality players to their side, which is itself needed to even compete in the CL.
In some ways they’ve benefited from the league having a “down year”, with more competition amongst the teams than in previous seasons. They need to capitalise on this opportunity and kick on.
Otherwise they could be just another… well, Newcastle. ;-)
