It's strange that they don't want it but I guess ownership doesn't want to pony up for any kind of European foray.

I think it could very well be that many more limited budget clubs do this in the future: only CL brings sufficient money and clout to attract top players, anything below that can be a detrimental exercise for all but the top clubs, both from a sporting and a financial perspective.
