I'm pretty sure they simplified it so it had to be the goalscorer handling it to be ruled out.

I've yet to see them go back for a handball in the build up. They only go back for fouls.
They simplified it in a way that scoring from handball, it won't matter if it's incidental. No matter what, you cannot in any way score with your hands. But like the previous poster said, you can deny goals where handball happened in the build up, if it's deemed an "obvious error".

I don't think so. If a players picks up the ball and throws it onto the goalscorers head and the ref somehow misses it you don't think VAR would rule out the goal?
