Of course it is a lot easier for the assistant referee to simply say he could not see the offside and therefore not have to give it...
due to his ahem... poor positioning. Lot harder to not give it if he is somewhere near to correct position he should have been in..
Without VAR there are all sorts of dubious means of covering their backs for non decisions, unsighted out of position etc.........
