If the Villa player had tried to stay on his feet instead of trying to emulate his captain’s mark for artistic impression he might have got a shot away. Never a red card either. But at least we now know that if you touch the ball and follow through it can’t be a penalty and by default a free kick.

The way penalties are given out these days it's a penalty all day long, OK he made a meal of it but if that was a scouser he'd have gotten 2 penalties and had 3 men sent off for walking funny.

For Christ’s sake, how many people on here don’t know the rules? Even though he touched ball first the Villa player still had control of the ball, the follow through then takes him out. However soft and however much he made of it, it’s a stonewall pen.

He clearly got the ball and the tackle wasn't careless, reckless or using excessive force so there is no foul.
