Going back in the mists of time Sheffield Wednesday used to have crosses instead of a penalty spot.Since when did they get rid of penalty spots

I think you are thinking of the Joe Corrigan incident. We had a pen awarded against us and the spot had long gone because of the mud. Joe knew that the ball was further forward than it should have been he advised the ref who thought that Joe was trying to delay the kick and booked him. The ground staff were summoned and measured out a new spot and it proved that Joe was right. I can't remember where or when it happened.So is this something Villa have done off their own bat.
I recall a match once where the spot was missing due to the weather and they arrived with a bucket of sawdust
