Our club’s greatest goal was scored after a certain stud of a striker was clearly fouled and he powered through it. That’s what real, honest humans do.

Put another way, do you think that gets whistled as a foul if the attacker doesn’t make a meal of it? I don’t.
I don't remember a challenge on Mario before he nudged it in the net with his shoulder? ;)

But if the ref has decided it’s not in the area, which he did by giving a free kick, doesn’t the VAR decision have to still be clear and obvious that it definitely was in the area, which I don’t think it was clear from the angle we saw? Don’t get me wrong I’m delighted, but if that was against us I’d be sick!

Put simply - no, that isn't how the rules work. It doesn't have to be Clear and Obvious. You're applying a section of the guidelines to a part of the laws where they don't apply.

The rules are very clear that for line decisions, it's either in or out. You just make the call based on the balance of probability whether you think it's in or out, that's all there is to it. The referees are just following the rules.

Now are the rules a load of shite? Almost certainly, but that's not really what I'm arguing here.

Probably not, but that doesn't factor into my decision on whether it's a foul or not, I think that's just a referee problem, they are shite and too easily influenced by player reactions. Remember Foden getting clearly fouled but not going down v Wolves? We were absolutely stewing about that decision - and rightly so.

Players exaggerate contact so referees don't fuck them over, but that doesn't mean it's not a foul.
Sadly “fouls” in many a sport are sometimes subjective vs objective — football relative to other sport I watch especially. The referees are a part of that. Perhaps I am of the “let them play” school. It’s a contact sport. To be fair, when I reffed kids and high schoolers I wasn’t as I was trying to protect them. In this case, at this level, I didn’t feel the attacker was impeded in any way by Van Dijk and the contact was incidental. Had that been clearly in the box I suspect the official wouldn’t have whistled it given the standard for a foul seems higher than outside the box given the stakes.

All this said . . . LOL Liverpool :)

Brentford cheating
Bringing on Keane Lewis Potter for Damsgard.
3 for 1 seems a tad unfair.

I agree entirely with your last point - no way he gives that if he thinks it's in the box.

Just shite luck for the Dippers, I guess!

Gomez for Wirtz, that poor Hungarian is getting played all over the place now to accomodate some "stars".

3-1 down and you're taking off your £150 million pound new signing. You love to see it.

When is Wirtz coming on? Hehe

The scapegoat is salah. Carried them for years, dips treatment is nothing like how we regard our legends.
