It’s a weird one because the ref probably wouldn’t have given it as a penalty, but did as a free kick. Most would say that it was a free kick and we move on with the game. However, once pointed out that the contact was on the line, nobody has a choice, as it’s factual, and people start talking about how harsh it is.

It was a free kick anywhere else on the pitch, which happened to take place on the line, which is therefore a penalty.

Exactly matches my assessment of it.

It's really just down to shit luck for Liverpool, not refereeing errors or incompetence or anything like that. But it wouldn't have even been up for debate if Van Dijk didn't stick a foot in, so I'm not sure Liverpool can really complain too much.

And that stray arm is another example of "It's a foul anywhere else on the pitch"
