It's tactical. If you lose the ball in an attacking position the opposition can counter attack and score, it's safer to let the other team have the ball and stay in your defensive positions.Woeful for sure but it is a recurring theme for attacking players in Mourinho sides

As good a player as he is, his passing is the least of his talents. He used to give the ball away all the time for us.
