What's the difference between Dipper England's decision to send Cancelo off and the dipper today?

I don't think the TAA incident and the Cancelo incident are comparable.

The laws are ambiguous and give officials their get out clauses.

Law 12: "A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force: charges, jumps at, kicks or attempts to kick, pushes..."

It then goes on to qualify with "Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed.

Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned.

Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and/or endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off."

You could easily say that TAA's challenge was careless, but referees get away with these by saying that in their opinion it wasn't enough to warrant it being given as a foul. It becomes a subjective matter. When is a foul not a foul?

The VAR should have asked the referee to view the incident from other angles though, sand like Souness, I'm sure he would have seen the side on angle as a penalty.

Agreed. Am also assuming that the benefit of the doubt regarding offside doesn’t now exist. I also thought VAR only used if it’s a clear and obvious mistake - very tight off sides either way can’t be clear and obvious. All this does is raise the temperature. The more players and managers moan and lobby the ref the more chance they have of a VAR review. All an absolute mess.
