The breakaway threat has always been a meaningless threat, they’re never going to follow through with it because as much as they want to big themselves up with self-importance no club is bigger than the league.
Any team that wants to breakaway would be in trouble instantly, wouldn’t last a season and would come crawling back tail between their legs begging for reentry.
Even if the so called big 6 all did it, it would still be the premier league that holds all the cards. A Breakaway “super” league is pure fantasy that nobody really wants to see, the players will all leave when they realise they’re playing a handful of games a season that are more like pre-season exhibition matches, the passion will be gone as stadiums are filled with armchair fans as a one-off before even they get bored of it then the money dries up and it all falls to pieces.
This has been touted around as an idea for decades now and it hasn’t happened because it’s not financially viable and it’s not wanted. It’s an embarrassing threat at this point.
