President Trump

I can hardly believe I am posting this.
Trump plans to fire live rounds into Camp Pendleton, CA from US Naval ships to coincide with the no kings protest. Air traffic and route 1-5 will be severely curtailed. They are pretending this is a celebratory act but intimidation is the real motive. This story is well sourced. The madness gets worse.

As this is supposed to be the Trump thread, i don't want to derail it.
However, i will say i was a victim of positive discrimination, and it was devastating. If you want/need any further information, feel free to message me. Don't reply to this thread.

I was 16 and on a YTS scheme for British Rail (1986). I applied for the job of Junior Railman at Oxford Rd.
I took the time to visit the station, spoke with the managers, and did some platform work in my own time.
I cleaned the toilets, and assisted passengers.

I had a great interview, as i answered the questions with ease. (i'd done my ground work)

I was offered the job the next day. This was my first proper job and i was ecstatic. I quickly informed my family and friends. I was given a start time of about a week. On the Friday (before starting that Monday), i was asked into the station manager's office at Piccadilly. I was informed that i hadn't now got the job.
It was explained to me that manpower services had reviewed recruitment from the YTS trainees, and they hadn't met the requirements for equal opportunities. There was 25 of us. Two on the course were black and Asian. To that date, 11 had been offered jobs, but not them two.
So although i could see the manager was embarrassed. I was told the Asian lad had already been offered it. (before even speaking to me).

My world fell apart. You cannot imagine the devastation. I really needed the money. My single parent dad was on the breadline, and we were struggling just to keep the gas and electric on.
I had to go and tell friends and family the news.
I was told at the meeting how unfair it may seem, but to keep applying for jobs as they wanted me.

Well it was a while before another job came up. I applied and got it.
The lad who got Oxford road quit within six weeks. He refused to clean the toilets even though it was in the job description. Was constantly late, and was rude to passengers. He then quit to go work for some uncle.

You would have thought i would be bitter. But i wasn't. I actually understand that racism is very real.
I understood the good intentions to help minorities. It actually made me more aware of discrimination in the workplace.
However, i never really found the Railway racist. There were some racist comments now and again from some of the older workers. But i would say sexism existed then. It was a male dominated environment. It has taken great strides to eradicate that though. Just changing job descriptions from "Signalman" to "Signaller" for example. We all thought it petty and PC at the time. More because we thought "Signalwomen" would do it etc. But over time, we actually saw it for the barrier that it actually was.

It should always be the best person gets the job. Not because a target hasn't been met.
Advertising a job that states a preference for a certain type, is almost a legal way of saying don't bother applying.
Lowering standards is also a no no. You are either good enough or not.

So instead of just looking at numbers, more time and effort should be spent finding out why the numbers are not being met, and making sure there are no barriers stopping people from getting jobs.
Although i would agree, this is harder said than done!
Reads like a Dave Gedge song.

Clearly the meting is a complete waste of time and merely an opportunity to pose and feel good about himself whilst Putin yet again shafts him.

Im not a big fan of positive discrimination/affirmative action although I think there are some situations where it's merited.

But you dont get to fly a plane of you're not qualified, to suggest otherwise is undoubtedly racist.

And all these MAGA freaks that go on about DEI hire whenever a woman or ethnic minority has a job are basically saying that person couldn't possibly be there on merit or because they were the best candidate for the job.

Which is also undoubtedly racist.

what always freaked me out was the annual on-line ( we worked from home even in the 90's) training module we had to complete. It was about diversity and we were "taught" and had to pass a test about recognising a lack of diversity. We were taught about BAME employee's, female employee's, gay employee's and so on. We all passed and proved we could spot a lack of diversity and understood when it made us or a colleague feel uncomfortable, how to report it up the line and what action to expect. Then all give or take 36 of us white males aged between 30 and 60, all married with kids went back to work and were encouraged to never ask why the department was made that way ..........

As I say, bloke was a ****.

Yeah, but apart from that…

Having been in a profession where I think there’s probably been a bit of positive discrimination in recent years, I think overall it’s been a good thing.

It’s not about giving people who are not suited or up to the job an opportunity they don’t deserve; it’s about giving those who are up to the job, who have been disadvantaged by society, a chance in life.

If you don’t try and work at the edges, then fuck all changes.

Like anything it’s about to what extent it’s applied. If it’s everything then it’s a terrible idea, but if it’s part of a number of criteria, then it’s commendable.

Just because you didn’t get a job because positive discrimination was in operation, it doesn’t mean you were a better candidate. Maybe you were completely unsuited to the job. Or came across as a **** in the interview.

Whatever your skin colour.
