For the same reasons the U.S. has always wanted Greenland, and the issue of Danish sovereignty is not black and white. I made a post a couple of weeks ago citing articles going back some time that all stated quiet plainly what the issues where. I'm not going to do it again. This Wikipedia article does a decent job of summarizing historical claims and purposes.
