Not the attitude of the country I’ve grown up in, sadly seems to be becoming more prevalent.Yep, pretty much in a nutshell.

There’s nothing wrong with “helping the needy.” Indeed, many people share your resolve, but feel like “charity begins at home” and economic migration and asylum need a strong policy to survive over the long term.Sorry if I think I live in a country that takes its moral responsibility to help the needy as a something to be proud of. As it historically has, whichever government has been in power.
I for one don’t want that to be eroded. Don’t really care whether you do or not.
What’s the POLICY ANSWER we can rally behind? The cogent thought that beats through the “shoot em where they stand” blather? Not the attitude of the country I’ve grown up in, sadly seems to be becoming more prevalent.
I'm 53 and as for "share" the responsibilities. Why?Not the attitude of the country I’ve grown up in, sadly seems to be becoming more prevalent.
I have already said, more than once, that I advocate the free movement of people across the globe. That would not be acceptable to the UK electorate, I grant.Clearly, trying to fix all problems in the world in one fail swoop is a fool’s errand, especially when attacking major industries is part of the plan, so let’s settle on what YOUR version of a reasonable immigration & asylum policy might look like, as a Starter for 10, as it were.
Because I was fortunate to be born in a largely safe peaceful prosperous tolerant democratic country. Others weren’t so fortunate,. I ask myself what would I do for my family living under some terrible circumstances just by where they happened to be born.I'm 53 and as for "share" the responsibilities. Why?
We absolutely have a responsibility. Well said.Because I was fortunate to be born in a largely safe peaceful prosperous tolerant democratic country. Others weren’t so fortunate,. I ask myself what would I do for my family living under some terrible circumstances just by where they happened to be born.
Those that decide to trek and risk their life to try and reach a better life at least deserve to be listened to a treated with respect.
All of us in the richer countries have a responsibility for that equally, to just those that happen to border those areas. Why should they shoulder the burden?
Especially as historically we and others have plundered some of those countries to become the rich country we became.
Not my job is it, I can know somthing is wrong without having the perfect answer, the political parties present policies and I vote for those that share my values. The tories have usually at least on refugees and asylum not been the nearest to mine but also not been anything like this tory government either. What’s the POLICY ANSWER we can rally behind? The cogent thought that beats through the “shoot em where they stand” blather?
Surely, it can’t be let em in, give em a few quid, tell them to show up in court in a few years with a lawyer and we’ll have a gander at their case, can it?
The nation will not rally behind anything that allows immigrants to continue to be accepted into the nation so this is not solvable, in my view. What is needed is proper leadership that gets the nation behind the joy of a prosperous, welcoming nation whose heart and borders are open to those in need but that it is recognised that we all play a role. Companies have to pay enough to their employees so that tax revenues can be used to support emergency services and housing and roads and social services. Individuals need to make a contribution by being self-supportive and ensuring that the state does not have to raise the child that they chose to bring into the world. Business needs to be properly taxed and recognise that we stand for something as a nation and that it has a role too in providing the services needed and that the improved salaries can help to enhance demand for their products and services. This is a huge job and not one that is simply a tick box on the box marked immigrants. What’s the POLICY ANSWER we can rally behind? The cogent thought that beats through the “shoot em where they stand” blather?

Excellent answer on the non-answer on which you’ve decided to stake your claim after multiple previous pages of non-answers!Not my job is it, I can know somthing is wrong without having the perfect answer, the political parties present policies and I vote for those that share my values. Probably all the other parties, and previous tory governments have had better policies than locking people up in prison.
The policy we have today is better than this, and as this thread is about this policy ,not come up with a perfect policy, thats what I’m posting about this policy.
